Gates Millenium Scholarship Official Thread 2013

Major in Biology with double minors Psychology and Chemistry!

Guys arent you mostly undergrads?

how do u get double majors/minors? Dont you have to start attending someplace before getting minor and double major options?

i applied as a math major with an alternate of bio sciences

poeticbynature asked what we WANT to major in. :P

I’m somewhat undecided but I’m thinking about having a career in the pharmacy, forensic science, or microbiology field with a minor in Latin and/or Spanish.

I’m fairly sure you can request a double major/minor, if your university offers it which is likely.

Yeah, we shouldn’t take this soo seriously. Le sigh. We find out about Gates Millennium statuses in about a rough estimate of a month

I’m majoring in finance with an engineering minor

Did anyone notice that the website doesn’t say mid-March anymore it just says March? O.o maybe its a sign and the letters will come earlier in the month like the last few years!

I noticed that too!

I keep telling myself that that day is (slowly) coming closer and closer. I am so anxious…! Good luck everyone!! >.<

I hope it is like last year’s 'cause then that means it’ll come next week! Ahh!!! So nervous!!

Next week??? Omg anxiety starting to build up… Good luck guys!!

Ahhhh I’m soo anxious! Does anyone know how early people were informed of their status last year?

Around the week of March 12th, but reading around College Confidential, some have been notified as early as March 7th. Either way we’ll hear about their decision in less than 2 weeks D:

Wow I cant believe its only a few weeks now

Hey guys!
I’m from GMS cohort 2011. I’d like to say congrats to you guys applying for this scholarship. I wish you all the best of luck when it comes to finalist decision time and ultimately scholarship recipient decisions. I remember when I got my finalist letter and I was in complete shock. I thought they were joking and I sent them an email but they reassured me that this was real. I didn’t know any better at the time. And then April came and I found out that I got the gates scholarship. I found out literally when I got back from my campus visit of ucla which is currently where I attend to study mechanical engineering. Anyways, I was estatic when I found out and since then it has changed my life.

I want to let you guys know that no matter what the outcome is, you all have come a long way and should be proud of what you’ve done so far. There are only better days to come and if this opportunity doesn’t work out, better ones will be available in the future. Good things always come in unexpected ways.

Oh Goody! We have first hand experience! I had a question on EFC. As far as Gates, I know that they ask for your financial aid award letter from your selected college and then determine what they will pay for later. I wanted to know if my contribution towards my education is dependent on my EFC or my calculated number from my college.

Did you have an EFC of 0?

I did have an EFC of 0.

Your contribution is calculated through the college. Your EFC just shows that your parents don’t need to pay. However you can have an EFC of 0 and still need loans if your school doesn’t cover everything with scholarship/grants. Fortunately I didn’t have that problem and the schools I got into covered everything, well except Cal Poly SLO. That was the odd case. I got a lot of academic merit scholarships and presidential scholarships that certain schools offered. So to answer about your contribution question, it varies with different schools.

Hi,

How important is the EFC? I thought the requirements were just that you were Pell Grant eligible.

labmiugac2993 when did you get notified that you were a finalist and later a scholar?

EFC is actually important when it comes to the pell grant. Their is a certain EFC cut off for pell grant which I currently do not know but some people have lost the scholarship due to the fact that later on their parents made too much money.

I was notified of my finalist status early march and found out I received the scholarship I want to say around mid April. From what I can remember is I came back from UCLA because I went to RAZA weekend and open house. My mom had received the big envelope on a Saturday when I was gone and I opened it immediately once I got home. To this day I can’t believe I received the scholarship. It truly was and still is an enormous blessing.

Thanks so much for the information.
