@scubamom9026 Thanks! yeah I called scuba and talked to him a couple weeks ago. I sent him a few of my essays already but I don’t know if he got the chance to look at it yet. And i’m actually surprised to see someone from Sinton on College Confidential, it’s usually just me! I’m a Senior this year and I started my application this month. Mrs. Gibson is actually my nominator and my recommender is my pastor.

@ScubaMom9026 also, are you sure that the readers will be with the same ethnic group?

@ Jackytang 23. re: ethnic group - yes. I did a lot of research the year that Anthony applied. I read it somewhere, but don’t ask me where right now. I’ve slept since 2013. lol. Also, Anthony told me that you have been in contact with him. He is taking 19 hours this semester with physics and calculus at the same time. He has 3 weeks off during winter break, so give him some time. You don’t want too many people reviewing your essays though because you don’t want your essays to come across as being too fluffed up. Anthony only had 2 reviewers. One reading for content to make sure that the essays made sense (also to ensure he didn’t come across as arrogant) and one looking for grammatical errors. You don’t want to tell the reader how wonderful you just because of academics…you want to sell yourself based on challenges you had to overcome. Have you read Anthony’s essays? Somewhere I read that these essays also serve as an aptitude test indicating how well you will do at the next level not necessarily academic wise, but determination wise. Hope this helps you.

@ScubaMom9026 yes, i understand that he is busy. Trust me, I know! I’ve so stressed out with all the scholarship applications and college deadlines lately! I’ve read his essays and they’re great. All of my essays are about the experiences/difficulties I’ve had and how those made me become a better person. I wrote more about ME than about my academics. Actually I don’t think I’ve even talked about grades yet at all. For Ex: I wrote about my difficult subject, English, because it was my second language and how I worked hard on it to make that weakness my strong point. I knew when I saw the scholarship that it was based off of character and not academics because the application doesn’t ask for GPA or test scores at all (trust me I’m not arrogant because my test scores are nothing to brag about lol)Instead, most essay questions were about leadership, personalities and challenges. Also, thanks for the advice’s!! It really helps to know that the person reading my essays is from the same ethnic group because I didn’t know Instead, most essay questions were about leadership, personalities and challenges. For determination, I put how I started school late when I moved to the U.S. in third grade. I didn’t know anything back then and now I’m 3rd in my class. (I didn’t put my rank but I said something like my grades improved drastically due to all the hard work). Also, thanks for the advice’s!! It helps to know that the person reading my essays is from the same ethnic group because I didn’t know that before.

@Jackytang23, good luck hun! I’m praying that another one of our own can be a recipient this year. :)

Hi, i have a unweighted GPA of 3.25 and weighted gpa of 3.5. Am i eligible?

@iMadhav You are not eligible at the moment because GMS is based off of unweighted GPA and it must be a 3.3. If you think you will have a 3.3 unweighted GPA by January 14. then you should still apply.

what if gpa falls bellow 3.3 when you become a finalist? How bad would that look?

@PassionForUMiami Thank you. That was helpful.

If you receive Questbridge can you also get gates for graduate school?

I hope everyone is busy writing those essays! I know I am. In any case, I just a had some questions about the Nominator and Recommender forms.

On the GMS website, under the documents preview tab (Nominator form tab), it says, “GMS accepts applications from individuals only. Evaluations of the student’s academic record (Nominator Form) from organizations or educational institutions will not be accepted.”

Does that mean my nominator can’t come from an “educational institution” such as my school?

Do you guys recommend getting separate Nominators and Recommenders; is it better than just having one person be both your Recommender and your Nominator?

Thanks you guys, much appreciated!!!

@CogHsu In regards to number one, I don’t think they mean that. I think they meant like an actual organization writing it as opposed to a person.

As for the second one, it depends on you personally and who knows you/your accomplishments best. Like for my nominator is my GC, but my recommender is a community leader who I’m close with.

Hi! I am an African American in Cleveland, Ohio and I am applying for the Gates Millennium Scholarship! My unweighted GPA is 3.84, and I have taken nothing but Honors and AP Courses. In addition, I have filled out all of the slots for extracurricular activities, awards received and leadership positions… I just do not have any work experience… I am the oldest child and live in a single-parent household of three people (including myself). My mom has been laid-off from her job in October so I know for sure that her adjusted gross income for 2014 is $61,800. What are my chances of becoming a Gates Scholar?

@CogHsu That first question doesn’t mean that your nominator can’t come from your school. For the second question, I don’t think it matters just as long as the person or people know your academic and community service achievements. I had a separate one for each…

@Ryanne15 I had a 4.1 GPA and had every slot filled in except work experience just like you. My income was significantly lower, but I don’t think that should be a problem for you as long as you’re pell grant eligible. You have a good chance. Just make sure everything is written to the best of your ability. Also, keep in mind that the graders are aware that if you are involved in multiple activities (such as sports, voluntering…) that there really is no time to work and vice versa. So don’t worry about that. :)

@Marrissa - I’m pretty sure that you can. You would just not receive funding from Gates until you request the funding you need.

@CogHsu For the first question, the nominator can come from the school. My nominator worked at my school. For the second question, it all depends who is great at writing about your academics and your community service. My nominator and recommender was the same person.

@Marissa , Gates only covers a few grad school majors. But QB and Gates are two separate programs…congrats on your QB match. You can (should) apply for gates My D was a QB match to Amherst years ago which covered her need, yet her being a Gates Scholar payed her work study every semester. She got a check every semester from Gates that was the amount of work study on her FA award letter.

Hello! I would like to take you up on your offer! Could you read my for the first prompt? Thanks in advance

Hello, I’m applying for the scholarship and I have a question about the academic record.
If I’ve taken AP courses, do they count as honors level?
