Gates Millennium Scholarship - 2008-2009

Ok, that makes sense. I've seen some ppl on CC who keep mailbox vigils or post news of acceptances, and I'm always wondering, "At what random hour of the day do you get mail because it's definitely 9 PM EST and I can tell by your location that you are not in Hawaii."

lol

So, the first wave of mail for Asians were postmarked on the 28th from APIASF offices in DC.

That makes a lot of sense that Sasinb was the first Asian CC notified since mail from DC to MD probably takes a day.

Good luck everyone. And please, try to relax.

*double post

Congrats again everyone! Hey Sasinib, when did you submit your required documents?

Oh yeah definitely. I know that the mailman comes at a regular time every day, usually around 12:30PM, so I know when to run downstairs and check the mail.

im losing hope ;( i wanna cry right now...i don't want a rejection...
speak_easy, for some reason i cannot relax...AAHHHH
Sasinib and memberofthevrwc.. when did u guys submit ur documents?

C'mon GMS, c'mon Hispanic Scholarship Fund... [cheer/prayer]

@Haha...do you need to be sedated? lol

@Haha... I sent my stuff in the day after Hispanics were notified (March 11). The letter itself was dated March 24.

I submitted them on Mar 13 th. Two days after I received my finalist notification.

Sasinb, when did you submit your forms?

I am from Arizona so it probably takes a few days for something from DC to reach AZ. Hopefully I get a notification soon though.

Wow I also sent in my documents on the 13th. OK this means that if I do not receive something on Mon/Tues then AHHHHHH!

Where are you located Mr Tang?

so if gms notifies on rolling basis, does this mean that it "first come first serve"?

yes, speak_easy, i need to be sedated....i really do...LOL

AHHHH Tension, I want to go to UCLA so badly, but alot id left on loans, Santa Clara U offers me a scholarship for 34k while in full it costs about 38, Santa clara is looking very good right about now

No. "First come, first serve" implies that you'd be selected as a scholar just for turning in your stuff early and it would be completely a chaotic way to select winners.

Rolling most likely means that they evaluate the documents submitted as they come in and in some cases can immediately accept/reject a finalist. For example, if an applicant filled out their FAFSA and turned out to be ineligible for the Pell Grant. GMS could immediately notify this finalist that they are, in fact, ineligible for the award.

GMS doesn't release the number of finalists chosen, but I personally think that the number of finalists is most likely just slightly more than 1000 (the number of eventual winners).

It makes sense that an applicant pool of 13,000 could be whittled down to maybe 1,100 (give or take) finalists and then you can toss out the people who are financially ineligible and also those whose GPA didn't actually meet the minimum in the end. I chose this number since it would make sense that the number of finalists is less then 10% of the applicants and then the winners are about 90% of the finalists.

I imagine it must be similar to how college could have 715 spots for an incoming class but send out maybe 850 acceptance letters, accounting for the fact that not every person will attend.

I doubt anyone would turn down the GMS scholarship, so they probably select a group of about 1000 finalists, plus a few, just in case some are ineligible or after further review do not seem GMS scholar material.

The first part of the GMS application was so specific and comprehensive, that I feel the GMS people already have a very good idea of each applicant when they choose finalists. The finalist round seems to be a confirmation or verification of each applicant. It didn't even really ask for additional information. Just a transcript, school report, SAR and GPA.

Even though it's not first come, first serve, as the proverb says: "Early bird catches the worm," so it can't hurt to turn your stuff in early.

memberofthevrwc - I'm from WA.

My friend who is Hispanic received her letter today! I'm so happy for her!

@Mr Tang -

Since you submitted your items already... I would assume that this week you will most likely be notified.

GOOD LUCK to you and everyone who hasn't heard.

I got my finalist rejection in the mail today! FINALLY. I was so annoyed with having to wait and I'm glad it's over and done with. However, I find it a bit rude that my letter was dated on March 7 and I'm JUST now receiving it. Whew, good riddance. Now I can focus on the other scholarships I have to wait for. Wish me luck guys!

sorry to hear that lalalexi but I'm sure you'll win a lot more scholarships :)
