Gates Millennium Scholarship 2013-2014

@GA2012MOM thank you for your input! I’ll get right on that. :)

For those who are admitted to Princeton and some other Ivy Leagues, don’t they supply grants – not loans – to pay for all demonstrated need, allowing each and every student to graduate debt-free? If so, how will the Gates Millennium Scholarship factor into that person’s financial aid package? Would the Gates Millennium Scholarship even come into play?

@GMscholardad Yes, many of these schools do provide generous financial aid. Outside of the Pell Grant and University Scholarships, students still have to do work studies and get summer jobs, which constitute the “student’s contribution”. With the Gates Millennium scholarship, students can avoid the burden of a summer job and work study. It has been rumored that in cases where the student is able to cover their cost of attendance without Gates, they can use Gates to study abroad. Nevertheless, the students can and should still use Gates to pay for graduate school. @Sinaj could give more insight as to how it works with Stanford. @GMscholardad Is your child a 2014 scholar or a scholar from a past year?

DiteGMScholardad, my daughter was a student in the situation you describe above. Where Gates benefitted her was they covered her work study, she got a check each semester for the amount that her school had designated on her FA award. Originally my daughter didn’t want to go through with Gates because she didn’t see any benefit either since everything was covered by her school. I nicely explained to her to fill out the Gates application or have fun walking to your work study job in the dining hall, gym, etc. at 6 a.m. oh, and DD, dress warm for that walk in the snow!

She got it, and promptly filled out the application.

Eta: Back when my daughter was a scholar, the recipients also got a computer and a printer of their choosing. Kind of ironic that Bill Gates paid for a nice 17" macbook pro and printer for her! I think the fact that most kids were getting macs led to them cutting out the computer gift a year or two later.

@GA2012MOM No!!! Not my Mac! =((

She still has it 6 years later, however when she took it to the IT people at her medschool a couple of weeks ago, they looked at it in amazement and told her to expect for it to just die and not turn on any day now! :frowning:

@GA2012MOM Wow!

@emjkitty @ScubaMom9026 said “when I notified my son’s school that he was a scholar, they reduced the deposits required by 50%. Talk to your school’s admission counselor in regards to this area”. I hope this helps!

@rhythmandbible ahhh I see. Okay so it various from university to university. I emailed them since the FA office is closed today. If they don’t email me back, I’m going to call Monday. THANK YOU! :)

@emjkitty You’re welcome :smiley:

Still no letter. Gotta wait again. :frowning:

Really?? We need to hunt down your mail carrier! :>

Hey everyone! I’m so excited!! I can’t wait to meet you all!!! :D

I haven’t received my letter either! Both the finalists from my school have already gotten theirs however, and they are both scholars.

@anduhruu That’s so weird…do you all have same zip code?

No I don’t think so, but the other two are African American and I’m Asian, so maybe it’s because of the UNCF and APIASF.

@anduhruu Oh, okay.

Apple is better anyway. Forget this sorry ass scholarship cuh

@thehomiealan So you’re mad?!? Did you get your Gates letter yet, “cuh”, or do we need to hunt down your mail carrier too?
