So... I'm thinking about applying for the Gates Millennium Scholarship... but as I was looking at the instructions and guidelines, they are SOooO complicated and long. Additionally, it requires like 8 essays... HOw many people usually get this scholarship? Is it hard? Will I be wasting my time by applying since it's due Jan. 13 and I haven't start on it?

reads that you have already given up. You've answer your question before asking.

Does anyone know the exact amount of money this scholarship is worth?

Four years full tuition paid. Best scholarship there is for an undergrad.

how many people usually get this??

not as many as apply

My guess... is about 10 or so from each state... cause i know of 10 from my state that got it.. (by the way, I live in IL)

I mean..they are short answer essays...if you dont do it you have a 0% chance..look at it that way..and its not 10 from each state,,,there is no set #...bascially some people are getting the money they need to fill in the gap that the financial aid office couldnt fulfill..so i have one friend getting aroung 500 a year and another getting like 7,000...so this means the amount of applicants will vary depending on the need of the applicant pool

i don't think it's full tuition unless you didn't get anything from your college which isnt likely since you have to be qualified for the pell grant. my cousin got this and she said that they just cover whatever wasn't given.

it's only for African Americans, am I right?

no..... it's for .....
The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American*, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest.

I found a link to an interesting and detailed pwrpt about the scholarship. It's kind of old but was helpful to me and answers some of your questions.

How do you know if you're qualified for a pell grant since we can't file FAFSA till the 1st and the scholarship application is due on the 13th?

you just gotta sumbmit the application and hope

wow i was close to doing this having only seen the first essay prompt (and even with that i was a lil frustrated) ...when i saw all 8 essays.. 0.0

i tried the discover card scholarship (25k) last year...that was kinda a hassle (4 recommendations and write-ups)..i ended up not getting anything

expecting the same for gates

good luck everybody

How do you know if you're qualified for a pell grant since we can't file FAFSA till the 1st and the scholarship application is due on the 13th?

do you recieve or are you eligible for free or reduced lunch at school?

Seems like alot of scholarships are based on how much parents make. Its kind of not fair, my Dad is a NYPD det , we live hand to mouth w/no luxuries, but because he makes more than $50,000 a year I don't qualify for some awards. Gates included.

I printed out the forms and looked at the essay space and said "ok, this isn't too bad" because it looked like you only had to type about 400-500 words or so for each question. I go to the online portion and it says 7800 characters max and I drop my jaw... 7800 characters is A LOT, like more than 3 pages single spaced. They can't possibly expect us to get near that for every single response, right?

well.... the way I look at it.. it's the content that matters, not the length.. Also, it's maximum 7800 characters..... so it can be less..

I have learned a tremendous amount of 411 from this and other sites, and for that I am grateful. Heres the deal w/us: Husband=NYPD Det, Myself freelance writer, Son=HS Senior-no income, 7yo daughter. AGI= less than $75,000. Although we live paycheck to paycheck, we will NEVER qualify for ANY FINANCIAL need based scholarships, and we definitely do not live above our means. SO......son is applying to merit based scholarships etc, aka- does not require financial disclosure. Gates was out immediately upon reading other informative student/parent vital info that saved us alot of time. Hope this helps!!
