Gates Question

Hey! I have a question about getting the Gate Millennium Scholarship.

Lets say you apply and get into x university and they grant you a 28k scholarship over 4 years, so 7k a year. You find out your a Gates Scholar and they are going to cover all your costs.

According to a counselor, that 7k is yours? I don't think that's true? Apparently the counselor says you get whatever amount you didn't use in the form of a refund check.

If tuition is 33k grand, 0 EFC, Eligible for all grants, lets say the costs that Gates needs to cover would be 27k. From this, that 7k scholarship brings the Gates cost to 20k, which is what they pay...right?

Isn't the counselor wrong? Also, what if you get a 3k scholarship (from a different source, not school or Gates), this money gets sent to your university. What does the university do if there is like extra money in your account?

Also, what if someone won like a lot more money than they needed?

Thanks in advance. Asking out of curiosity because someone I know is in this situation.

Gates doesn’t cover all the costs for Scholars – I think it was like two years ago they stopped paying fo computers – so some of the 7K might go to some of the things they don’t cover.

I think you have the math wrong. With the 0 EFC, the amount that might be covered by Gates from the 33K is 26K after subtracting the 7K from the college. Then, if you get another 3K from another scholarship, they subtract that first and then Gates might pay 23K.

I never had the situation of extra money in my account, but I think you can’t get “more” money than you’re supposed to. Like, if you get a bunch of scholarships, they don’t give you extra money to use for whatever.

Gates has people at UNCF that Scholars can call and ask about stuff like this, and they always tell us to ask the financial aid officers at our schools. I’d suggest the person you know talk to the people at GMS.
