*** GATES SCHOLARSHIP 2017***

No I dont Im just feeling really nervous so im asking all these questions to make sure

@meismeis But you have a red bar under March? That has to mean ‘something’ because that is the ‘next phase’… I really would liek to hear what the rest of you see when you sign on to your page. Any of you with a red bar under March?

I don’t have a red bar but I asked because I remember red bars appearing in the next stage indicating that you were chosen the last round.

@meismeis Oh OK - you had me a little frightened there! yes, I do remember that once you were in the next phase, there was a red bar under the phase you had moved on to. So no, I don;t have a red bar under March so let’s hope that hasn’t happened yet!

@TheatreGeek007 Also, thanks for reasurring me on the recommenders part. That was what had me worried the most.

Don’t feel too nervous! Be confident! The red bar appeared in the last round shortly before emails were send out. Don’t read too much into it

Are we supposed to fill out the profile? It is under your name on the upper right corner.

I just opened my profile, and I have a red line under finalist interviews… Anyone else?

I just checked my status and the red bar is in March!

I filled out the profile, I don’t remember seeing it before or maybe I just over looked it.

I see a red bar too. Are you sure it means anything?

Honestly, unless someone doesn’t have it, it might have automatically done that at the start of March.

I agree.

I have the red bar also…wasn’t there last night - but as you said, it could be because the last phase has ‘ended’. But hoping it means more than that…

I also have it, so I think it was automatic.

@TheatreGeek007 I don’t have any inside information on the type of student that Gates chooses, so I was basing my comment on another high profile scholarship competition that almost exclusively selects Ivy/Stanford/MIT and similar admits, which all meet full need without loans for Pell eligible students. You are correct that it depends on the school a winner attends, but for the most part I stand by my comment that the pay out is far less than most initially imagine. You also make very important points that the family EFC is never reduced, which often shocks people, and that other outside scholarships are applied first.

@planner03 when my sister won Gates, and went to the national scholars weekend, (not sure they’ll do that again) she said that she was one of the only ones there going to a ‘state school’. Literally everyone else was headed to one of the more prestigious schools that, just as you said, were committed to meeting 100% of full need by the school. Gates probably had to contribute / pay more for her education than the kid that went to Brown or Harvard because those schools meet most or all of the need. I would agree with you that, most likely, the majority of finalists will be heading to competitive schools that meet most or all financial need. But there will be some that don’t, just like my sister!
One thing that was memorable though… when she graduated college and her friends were all decorating their graduation caps for the big day, she painted in really nice writing on her cap…”Thanks, Bill Gates!” It was awesome. I’m hoping I can do the same in 4 years!!

Good luck @TheatreGeek007!!! And everyone else!!!

@TheatreGeek007 What a nice story about your sister! Bill Gates is one of the most philanthropic person in the world!
