Gay acceptance?

I’m currently deciding between GW and UVA as my top choices for college. I’m majoring in international relations in the fall at either of the two, but I have a few questions:

Is GW or UVA more of a fit for international relations?

Is the overall population at UVA accepting of homosexuality? I don’t really mind if the gay population is small, just if other students will make my time there miserable.

My vote on BOTH counts is for GW; you can't beat being in DC for anything international, AND UVA is still considered a southern school with a ton of Greek life. I think those at GW would be, generally speaking, more accepting. Just my opinion. I am sure others will weigh in. Just for the record, I am a mom, not a HS senior....

I think GW is supposed to be the better school for international relations. Also, it doesn't get much more homosexual friendly than DC - probably more so than UVA.

UVA is reputable in IR, so you won't miss out at all.

The population is pretty apathetic about homosexuality, but there are more liberals than conservatives at this school.

Anyway, feel free to add me on AIM and I'll be happy to answer any questions - especially about the gay population since I'm in Queer Allied and Activism (political branch of LGBT community).

Sad to say that the Commonwealth of Virginia is not especially gay-friendly. There are pockets (especially in northern Virginia) that aren't like that but please remember that Virginia is a pretty conservative place on the whole (e.g., it is the Virginia Episcopal churches that are pulling out of the national church because of the ordination of a gay bishop and the selection of a women to head the national church).

DC is much more gay-friendly.

UVa might well be okay but you are right to look very carefully.

well they banned gay marriage already.. sigh.

Charlottesville is a liberal bastion in Virginia. [url=http://www.cvillenews.com/2006/11/08/midterm-election-results/]Just look at the stats from the mid-term election/url.

57% of voters in the state of Virginia approved the ban on gay marriage, but the bill failed locally. Only 41% of voters approved it in our county and only 23% of voters approved it in the city of Charlottesville.

Reply to my private message. Im a first year openly gay student at UVa who got into GW and UVa but decided to go to UVA. IM me! :) Ill be happy to help.

Person110, IMO, opt for GW. DC has alot going for it in terms of a liberal atmosphere. There are also other schools in DC so you're bound to meet more people as well. Good luck to you. You need to be where you'll be most comfortable.

i disagree. AS A GAY PERSON, i disagree. UVA isnt homophobic and the administration is very supportive. There are many closeted guys here!
