Gay community at Hofstra and other questions

I am a junior in high school and I am starting to get ready to apply to colleges. I am an openly gay male and I am seeking a college near a big city (New York City) because big cities tend to have larger gay communities. I was wondering what the gay community was like at Hofstra. Is there a big or small gay population at the university? Are students open-minded and accepting of other gay students? Also, since I want to be in the city somewhat frequently, how much do students tend to travel into NYC? Any responses would be great. Thanks!

Hi icemangervin26,

The gay community at Hofstra in unlike any I have ever seen. I myself am an openly gay male at Hofstra. There is the Pride Network which is composed of gay students who are working towards reform not only at Hofstra but also out in the “real” world as well. They will put on different programs such as showing gay movies, having gay contests(pick the gay gay out of 5 guys), and much more. Most recently they had a drag show featuring Carmen Carrera from RuPaul’s Drag Race (that was awesome lol). There is also a Gay-straight alliance as well as groups to discuss homosexuality for those who may be uncomfortable with their sexuality. The gay community at Hofstra is about medium sized. The university as a whole has more people who identify as heterosexual but there is a nicely sized gay community. All students are very open-minded about homosexuality, I can personally say I have never encountered any problems in regards to my sexuality. We also have programs with our study abroad that focus upon homosexuality and we have classes that also focus upon it. In regards to NYC I personally try to go in every other weekend. Most students tend to go at least once a month and some classes actually take students into the city as part of class and go see a show. If you have any questions about anything else feel free to ask away or contact me. Good luck with your college search and I hope to see you around campus soon. :D
