<p>Is it prominent, or acceptable? How are gay students viewed? I would appreciate it if any current students could talk a little about the subject.</p>

<p>I have a few gay friends here (like 4-5). Not, like, very close friends, but a few are good friends nevertheless. I would say there is a quite prominent gay community at UChicago, since I’ve met many, many over the past quarter. I imagine there are some people who don’t want them around or are intolerant, but for the most part, it seems like most of the straight people just straight up don’t give a damn what your sexual orientation is. The important thing, most of us recognize, is what kind of human being you are. Your sexual orientation is just one [relatively] small facet of who you are as a person, and so you shouldn’t be stigmatized just because of that facet.</p>
<p>I might mention here that folks I know are very cool with different sexualities of all kinds – have we mentioned that the bondage club’s “Whip me, spank me, make me read the Iliad” shirt is always a top seller?</p>

)and I don’t want college to be as constrictive. Uchicago sounds perfect! Now I just need to get in…</p>
<p>The gay parties are the best! Make sure you meet some gay upperclassmen early on so you get the invites. It’s a great way to meet other gay people at uchicago, and just a lot of fun. </p>
<p>Otherwise, everyone is very open and accepting. Some people can be intolerant, but as far as I can tell, they keep quiet about it. I wouldn’t be too concerned about fitting in.</p>
<p>I’d say that the student body is very accepting–and so is the university. There’s an Office of LGBTQ Student Life that offers a support structure for LGBTQ students. Special events, discussion groups, lectures…tons of other things. You should definitely check out the resources they have to offer!</p>
