are there many gay students at union? would you consider it gay-friendly?

thanks in advance, mike

There were some incidents this fall and last spring involving emails or letters sent to people on campus from one individual. The campus community came together to comdemn the letters and support gay students/professors/etc. They cancelled classes for an anti-hate rally. (Son told me about it but I don't remember all the details.) I would contact the GBTQ club at Union to get the scoop.

I am not gay, but its nice to know that Union are accepting people that are different.

I'm a current student at Union, and I'd have to say that Union's gay population is almost non-existent at this point. The GLBT organization is close to being disbanded due to lack of interest, since due to the homophobic emails sent around, two of Union's gay population left the college and the remaining few are not very public with their views. In regular conversations with students, words like "gay" and "f****t" are used often as slang and derogatory terms.

If you are gay, or are mainly interested in the arts, Union may not be the college for you. Union's arts department is relatively poor. As a general rule, if you're not an athlete, you're not going to fit in with 97% of the people you meet at Union.

That's unfortunate. I just got my acceptance letter and financial aid package. I'm receiving almost full tuition. If anyone else can offer some insight it would be greatly appreciated..

I asked my son about this a few weeks ago. He has a few gay friends (he says they seem happy at Union) and he didn't seem to think it was a big deal. Son and most of his friends are not the typical Union sports/frat types. They may not be the majority on campus but I think there are enough "non-sports" types to give one a community. (Hmm...we're assuming YOU'RE not a sports type...) It is not the liberal kind of atmosphere you'll find, say, at Vassar, but I think for the most part people are accepting. If a large gay community is important to you, though, Union may not be what you're looking for. Good luck!

A large gay community isn't really important to me..i just don't want to have to be concerned about getting beat up. At my high school i'm one of maybe 5 gay kids that i know of (out of 1400) and we're not really given any crap, so i don't really want to move in the other direction. I went to summer camp at Union twice and I fell in love with the campus. That combined with my financial aid package has recently pushed Union into my top 3...
