I was chosen as a semifinalist! Does anyone know how many people advance to this round, how many applied, and how many end up receiving the award? Thanks!
YAY! Congrats!!! You survived! @lsmgirly
@Ismgirly Last year’s video said there were “over 13,000 applicants.” Then they went through 140 and downsized to 20 finalists. I’m assuming there are 140 finalists. Congratulations! Source: https://youtu.be/I3EqrAwzIBc?t=15s
Thanks! @Student145852
GE- Reagan Semi-Finalist!!! This is crazy!
Semifinalist!!! I can’t believe it!!
@dylan37 @IvyCupcake78 Can you guys post your stats? I’m curious.
My stats are not really all that @Student145852 the important thing is the amount of activities, most big scholarships use computers to make the first cut, so the more spaces you have something the more likely you are to move on. But here are my stats: 26 ACT, 1190 SAT, 3.89 GPA, 2 dual credit classes, 14 leadership positions in high school clubs, 1 state officer position, 23 state titles, 7580 service hours, 2 jobs (one summer one school), anything else just ask… Hope I helped
@dylan37 What do you count for service hours? 7580 hours in four years would be approximately five hours per day seven days per week. Maybe I am not counting everything I should. Thanks for the stats!
Volunteering is a huge part of my life. I have early dismissal from school so from 2-6 I volunteer at the local nursing home. Then any holidays I volunteer up to 12 hours a day. During the summer months I am a full time volunteer, so I am in the facility 10 to 12 hours a day! These hours add up fast over for years. Also on Sundays I lead my youth group and praise band so that is 4 to 6 hours each week. The key is to start as a freshman and keep an extremely detailed log of every services you are apart of! Most of my hours came from the nursing home/Church; however, if you keep records you can add 100+ just on things the school did. For example my school has clean up days, tutor days, etc. these events may only be 1 to 4 hours but over 4 years they add up @scout2017

Yeah I agree that this isn’t believable and will likely raise big red flags. Be prepared to justify that in your interviews.
I believe I submitted around 4000 service hours in my application, but most of those were through online mentoring volunteering that I did for lower income students, etc (and I attended an online high school, so I was basically available all day long). I believed that even that number sounded high (although it was true), so nearly double that is… really questionable.
Not trying to call into question your integrity. But, at the very least, your counting skills.
With all due respect @CourtneyThurston I will be glad to send you copies of my record book which list each activity by date and has an adult signature that verifies each activity and the hour count. I know my counting skills are correct because I submitted this detailed volunteer log and received the congressional gold medal. I apologize for having volunteer stats that are unbelievably in your opinion; however, they are very much true and can easily be proven (and in response to the “red flag” it will throw my recommendator submitted my log with his recommendation since he was also my recommendor for the congressional award.
I didn’t make it as a semi finalist , they told me last week. Tough competion
@dylan37 I don’t think she is trying to call you out or anything. It is an incredible number and I applaud you for that but I there are a lot of people who lie about their service hours on scholarship applications. I think Courtney is just trying to warn you that these board members have most likely seen many people trying to lie in order to make their application stand out. Just be ready to for them to ask about your volunteer work and be prepared to have proof. But by the looks of your comment, you have that all prepared! Great Job! But don’t be surprised by the fact that the board will ask you questions as if they are interrogating you because there are some people out there who have the audacity to lie on their applications. But anyways, good luck and let us know how it goes in the future!
