??? Gemstone or University Honors ???

Hi everybody,

So I got into the Honors college, but I am torn between University Honors and Gemstone. My biggest concern is that I was planning on double-majoring (Comp Sci and Math) and doing internships while at UMD; so I just don't want to shoot myself in the foot.

So...is it possible to do all that stuff at once?

Thanks
EddieD

Comp Sci and Math are hard enough as it is. I hear Gemstone is a major time commitment, so you might wanna factor that in too.

D1 turned down Gemstone mostly for the reasons you list, Eddie. That, and the fact that she’d had too many group-projects from hell in high school. There’s no way she could have done everything that she has done so far if she was in Gemstone. It was the right choice for her, but you just have to decide for yourself. I think that the time commitment becomes greater sophomore year and beyond, so you could always start in it and then decide later if you want to stay in. I don’t think this is uncommon.

Go with Gemstone for now–take the 1 credit class in the fall where you learn more about the program. You can make your decision based on the info you get there. If you decide to drop out, that class applies to the honors citation so you have nothing to lose.
