Gen Ed's v.s Major classes

So Elon is one of my ‘maybes’ on my list right now, and I was researching how many major classes there are compared to gen ed classes. What I found (and I’m not sure if this is correct) is that there are 68 hours (or sh’s) toward the mt part of the major, and 58-62 hours (or sh’s) are the gen ed part. Am I correct on this? Half of the classes you take every semester is gen eds? I just wanted to make sure I was correct in my research.

If you want reliable info from Elon (or any school) on a subject like this - it is best to ask the school directly. At Elon you might direct this question to Kimberly Rippy at krippy@elon.edu - she is the department audition coordinator and secretary and would be able to provide reliable information.

That is correct in the breakdown of gen ed vs. major courses. However, there is a lot of overlap built in there. Music, theatre and dance courses can be used towards half of the 8 hour Expressions requirement (the rest must be a literature course). And it’s possible to exempt part or all of the foreign language requirement with the school’s language tests.

And, of course, if you get any AP credits that’s a plus, too.

My S is a senior at Elon this year, and he has always felt the core requirements to be a strength of the program. He says it’s very easy to “live in the MT bubble” and not experience the outside world, and yet those outside experiences can provide a lot of background for the artist.
