Gen Y, They are expecting great things....

Hey, from the guy who started the Voting thread this is kinda linked off of it. Here a couple of facts about us....

'Think of them as this quiet little group about to change everything,'' says Edward Winter of The U30 Group, a Knoxville (Tenn.) consulting firm.

And at 60 million strong, more than three times the size of Generation X, they're the biggest thing to hit the American scene since the 72 million baby boomers.

-Question Who's Gen X?

Still too young to have forged a name for themselves, they go by a host of taglines: Generation Y, Echo Boomers, or Millennium Generation.

Instead, Gen Yers respond to humor, irony, and the (apparently) unvarnished truth.

"This is a generation that must be reckoned with. They are going to overtake the country."

''This is a very pragmatic group. At 18 years old, they have five-year plans. They are already looking at how they will be balancing their work/family commitments,'' says Deanna Tillisch, who directed the survey.

Oldest Turning 20 this year and most still a decade away form adolescence.

Boomer brands flopped in their attempts to reach Generation X, but with a mere 17 million in its ranks, that miss was tolerable. The boomer brands won't get off so lightly with Gen Y. This is the first generation to come along that's big enough to hurt a boomer brand simply by giving it the cold shoulder--and big enough to launch rival brands with enough heft to threaten the status quo.

here are the main names The Net Generation, Millennials and Echo Boomers

I want a good name, what do you guys think it should be? Subit your own, i personally only like echo but that still states that were linked to our parents. I want to be better.

I think our generation is going to be the generation that discovers some of the biggest things ever; reprogramming cells from scratch, a new energy source, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, etc.

That said, its still probably 40 years before we do this :)

Is it just me or is this kind of sad - we seem like a really uncool generation compared to the hippies. We aren't idealistic or rebellious enough - I think we will be known as the Yuppie generation.

^ I guess your right but us being the OLDEST of this generation we have yet to see what the 7 year olds screaming at their mom to buy them ice cream are going to do. And if its us that has to pay most of the national dept, mark my words you'll see some huge rebellion, maybe not like try to turn into an anarchy but you will.

Rebellious and idealism aren't necessarily the best traits. I have to agree that we are the most pragmatic generation though. Also, note that the world has definetely changed. We are growing more to become part of an international community, and more and more of us are learning to see things from both internal and external perspectives.

Agreed agreed - as part of this generation I myself see pragmatism as being an admirable and necessary trait. I am just saying that our generation might lack the 'spark' that has typically defined youth; that we may be growing up too fast if you will and I cant help but wonder if we are not missing out.

Missing out on what? Eating lead based paint chips? Were going to be as successful and making as much money when were 25 then when our parents had to work at it for 30+ years (Many things pending), Im greatful that my parents can afford my college and that i can have a pretty nice paycheck comming out of college (agian MANY things pending.) We have the world handed to us, mise well take it.

But that money may be bought at the cost of our morals - if we are too content we will likely turn a blind eye to the substantial problems still in the world. I am not saying discontent is desirable - but it does have the benefit of often breeding much needed social change.
