Gen Z, Spring Break and Coronavirus

Coronavirus is derailing some students’ spring break plans. https://insights.collegeconfidential.com/coronavirus-and-spring-break

So wealthy college students will not be able to travel to Cancun to get drunk and have casual sex. My heart is breaking for them.

Seriously - this is what is worrying people about the outbreak and colleges? They’re worried that the small percent of wealthy kids who will have to party in their own homes? Sheesh.

The entire survey reeks of privilege and wealth. First of all, only about 30% of the Gen-Z kids of college age are attending a four year college. So to call this a “survey of Gen-Zs” in misleading at best. Second, even of those 30%, the majority cannot afford a “beach destination” or a “colder ski vacation” during spring break.

They are claiming that, based on a biased survey of the wealthiest kids who are attending four year colleges, “54 percent of juniors and 67 percent of seniors will be going on a spring break trip this year.” While I am skeptical about these numbers actually being representative of the college student population as a whole, I would also say that even among this group, the number who are looking to travel to a beach resort or a ski vacation is not high. Most are looking to visit friends and family, perhaps in more “exotic” locations, if they have friends of family in such locations.

It is a survey of the wealthy kids to provide these wealthy kids with information about the activities of other wealthy kids like them, not a representative survey of the activities of kids from Gen-Z.

We have plenty of covid-19 threads. Surely this fits into one of them.
