General atmosphere at brown

are most brown students focused on their studies, or are there many students who don’t have to study very much to maintain good grades? i understand that the atmosphere is not very pressured (?), but is there a general drive to succeed among the student body?

just wondering; additional comments on this are appreciated!

I'd say this is many schools.

Students work harder than they like to admit. You have to study to get Bs, and study hard to get As, in general. In general students want to succeed, but they also want to enjoy themselves and help each other out. Any specific questions about this?

im sure it varies by classes, but about how many hours per day would you say the average person spends doing homework? do you feel like theres still time to breathe on weekdays?

It reaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllyyyyyyyyy depends on the person and the class. But I think almost everyone has time every night to go hang out at Jo's or the Gate for at least an hour with friends, unless they are cramming for an exam or finishing a paper.

I'm with Moat on this one. Lots of time [maybe too much] during the semester to do things. But, those last few weeks were rather depressing as I (like most) simply had paper after paper after paper to do.

thank you all for the responses! very helpful.

If you go to Brown's Critical Review Online, you can read course reviews by students that say how long they spend on each course for each week. Most students seem to spend about 3 to 5 hours outside of class on each course.

im looking to apply to brown, but im really worried that there is too much competition rather than support and colloboration. i know it varies with fields, but i dont want to be a doctor or lawyer, more poli sci.

atowngirl, the worries you just described are the very reason I CHOSE Brown. Now I've been here for a year, and I can honestly say that you have no reason to worry. Brown students are supportive, and much less competitive than elsewhere.

It is quite rare for most folks to speak of grades or grading in anything except vague terms.

+1 on MGCSINC. Though I havent made it there quite yet, I chose Brown because of those fears from other universities.

Yeah, like everyone said, Brown is known for being more community-focused and less cutthroat.

good to hear.. thanks guys!

brown doesnt have EASC, right?

what is EASC?

SCEA = Single Choice Early Action
No, Brown has ED and RD

Brown used to have EASC/SCEA/EA (whatever), but it switched to ED. Brown was getting completely swamped by all the EA applications and felt that ED was a better choice.
