So I got this book with a bunch of really creative essays in it(Essays That Worked: 50 Essays from Successful Applications to the Nation's Top Colleges), but then I was looking at essays that have been put online and they all seemed rather dry and not as interesting as the essays in the book I got. So I'm wondering, would it be better to write my essays like the ones in the book(more creative, not the same old "i'm hard working and perfect for your college, etc.") or like the essays that I've seen almost everywhere else(more serious, but definitely had a dry feel to it compared to the book)? Sure I want to get the college admissions people's attention but also their acceptance.

Rather than try to write an essay that conforms to those in a book, I suggest that you write an essay that speaks about you and gives the reader a glimpse of your life and that you honestly enjoy writing.

Too bad I don't honestly enjoy writing when its needed :p

You don't have to enjoy writing it, and imo it would be wrong to try to give the impression that you do when you don't--but you are wise to forget about how other people wrote and simply use whatever approach and topic allows you to be as personal, detailed, honest and revealing as possible.

Maybe "enjoy writing" was wrong. After you've written the essay, you should honestly like your essay. But I still think that if you write an essay that you yourself don't enjoy, other people probably won't enjoy it either.

I think you may be right--if the essay truly expresses one's self, expresses what brings pleasure and interest, then that pleasure and interest should shine through and make the essay enjoyable to read.

Thanks a bunch to everyone. You guys have given me a lot of good insight :)

With that one book, it showed people just writing more about what they wanted and I felt like there was a greater freedom and liberty in their essays.
