I know clemson is better in math and science and charleston is a liberal arts school, but overall which one is viewed as a more prestigious school.

More people in the US know of Clemson than of CofC. You can thank ACC sports for that. If you want to stay in South Carolina, I honestly cannot tell you which is considered better because I’m from DC. However, if you leave SC, I guarantee more people will know Clemson. I have known Clemson since I entered high school. I heard of College of Charleston at the end of senior year when some 5 kids from my high school decided to go there.

Yes but also I plan on going to graduate school, so i would assume grad schools know about colleges more than the general public?

I think Clemson is better known because of its nationally known athletics program. However I loved the College Of Charleston and if they had my major, I wouldn’t have a problem picking C of Charleston over Clemson. Both are VERY good schools.

Clemson is much more well known by the genral public. I live in St. Paul and most people at my school know of Clemson -three kids this year went there- but I doubt pretty much anyone has heard of Charleston.

Both are probably equal in terms of quality, they are just different in what they offer. Clemson is more science/engineering, while CofC is the opposite, more humanities.

correct me if i’m wrong.

Strongest Programs:

Clemson - Engineering, Agriculture, Sciences, Nursing, Education, Business
College Of Charleston - Business, Biological Sciences, Liberal Arts

pakjan, if you need more info on Clemson/C of C, let me know. I will be an incoming freshmen at Clemson in the fall and strongly considered CofC in my college search.

Clemson is more nationally recognized than College of Charleston, although both will give you a quality education.

Clemson is better known, obviously, but come on, Charleston is an amazing town :p

Believe me, few folks north of Washington DC or west of Atlanta have heard of Clemson. Same thing with College of Charleston, so it’s a toss-up.

I’d say Clemson has better name-recognition, but both are great up-and-coming schools. You’ll have fun and get a great education at either one.

wow thanks for all the replies, it looks like they are about equal.

Well, as previous posters have stated, they are probably equally prestigious each with a different focus. Clemson is more math-y and C of C more liberal arts.

BUT, as a former South Carolinian, I can tell you this: Charleston is a MUCH MUCH MUCH better place to live than upstate SC where Clemson is located. Trust me on this. I cannot overstate this.

I know, I have visited both, and I like the town of Charleston a lot. I just wonder, where do kids party, there aren’t really houses around?
