Generous Early Decision Schools

Hey

Are there any prestigious IVY "other ivy", "second tier ivy" wutever u want to call them..type caliber schools who are really generous with there Early Decision? Meaning that they accept a pretty significant less impressive kid during the ED than the RD.

Can you think of any?

Well, they all sort of are. But at Penn it's so extreme that their Dean of Admissions has admitted it gives them a significant boost.

It helped a lot at Princeton as well, but that's no more.

The school it probably helps the least at is Brown, unless you're a recruited athlete/legacy.

LACs tend to be more generous, (especially outside of the top ten)

Yea, there are many, you should go look up the schools you want to go to and see their ED acceptance rates..

Always the big issue with ED.........does going ED jeopardize one's chances of getting some merit scholarship $$.. Supposedly no, but I wonder........

when i applied to columbia, i noticed the ED admit rate for the engineering school (SEAS) was 60%. This was presumably reported for the year before I got admitted, so back in 2001 for the class of '05 (I was '06).

It felt like a bit of a loophole back then, but now the apps have gone way up and admit % way down.

s snack, do you know the percentage accepted ED for Penn?

I hope Penn is generous...I'm a definite ED applicant for 08'

"The school it probably helps the least at is Brown, unless you're a recruited athlete/legacy."

care to explain?

Penn openly states that they give preference to ED applicants

cory:

Brown always has the lowest ED acceptance rate in the Ivies, but one of highest RD.

Check out the book "The Early Admissions Game". It is a few years old by now but it helps you understand the system. The book also gives admission statistics for various schools' ED, EA, and RD rounds.

Columbia's disparity between regular decision acceptance rate and early decision acceptance rate is pretty insane.

Columbia RD Rate --> 10%
Columbia ED Rate --> 39%

What you guys were saying about Penn is pretty much true...

Penn RD Rate --> 18%
Penn ED Rate --> 34%

Northwestern RD Rate --> 28%
Northwestern ED Rate --> 49%

brown has had the lowest ED acceptance rate for the last few years but the RD rate still remains lower than dartmouth, penn, and cornell, and equivalent to columbia (if you include SEAS + college together)

you also have to take into account stronger applicants apply to penn in the ed round therefore they can accept more of them

PennHunter,

I believe that to be a misconception - do you have any evidence for this claim?
