Hi,
I'll be attending UC Davis this year under the genetics major. Although I'm starting to have second doubts with all the controversy and political issues hovering over the topic. I'm wondering if you guys think its a good major to stick with and if its reputable at UCD. I feel like changing to the typical biochemistry majors because pharmacy would be my second option of a career. Or possibly do you think a genetics major could get into med school? I feel that the courses required for a genetics major won't suffice the courses that graduate programs require. I love biology and I don't mind what field of it I get into, I just want to be sure I'm not digging my own grave because my coworker's friend graduate with a degree in genetics and she's currently working as a waitress.
Thank you.

1) Or possibly do you think a genetics major could get into med school?
A dance major could get into med school
2) Genetics is one of the most interesting classes I have taken at my school. If you stick with it, you will definitely like it. Also, if you do not want to go to med school, you could always get a PhD and research in genetics. It's an ever-expanding field and I was even considering switching majors to Genetics because it was so interesting.

Hope this helps!

I'm worried that the courses for the Genetics major won't prepare me as well as that of the Biochemistry major for med school. Also, I'm worried about the competition of getting into grad school for a PhD to research. Did you ever switch majors?

They will prepare you, you don't have to worry about that. All of your classes will not solely be Genetics courses, you will also have to take classes like metabolic biochem, moleculary bio, etc etc. for your major. If you're worried about competition for getting into grad school for a PhD, don't even consider med school because it is far easier. If you take school seriously and study hard, you can get into wherever you want.
No i didn't switch majors because I realized I was going to continue pursuing my education in medical school, so I just stayed with my Human Biology major. But I will take more genetics classes in the future.

The doctor I shadowed has a B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford. What exactly is the major of Human Biology. What colleges offer it?

Thanks.

It's pretty general actually. It requires a mammalian physiology class, as do most Bio majors, and some other upper div courses. Most biology majors are almost exactly the same, at my school at least, unless you take it with some kind of emphasis (e.g. biochem., bioengineering). I don't know which schools offer human biology, but my school does and I go to UCSD. Hope this helps.

Could I get a job at a biotech company with a genetics degree? Thanks for all your help! :)

Human Biology seems interesting..compared to general bio. Thanks it did help a lot.

Im sure you could get a job with a degree in genetics.

Pediatric,

If I recall correctly, one of my interview partners at Northwestern was a "Human Biology" major from Stanford, and her major was actually very interesting, but kind of strange. It involved a lot of sociology, psychology, a lot of the components that would be involved in dealing with the non-biological factors in disease.

That seems kind of contradictory. After all it is biology (study of living things and biotic factors) and it is Human biology (so it involves humans). Kind of strange how it involves psychology and sociology as well.

I'm friends with a senior who is currently taking IB Psychology and she is going to major in psych in college. She says IB Psych is really hard, but now that you mention psychology I might worth a try just to get a taste how psychology is really like.

Thanks for the info!

It seems like Human Biology majors vary in the courses they require for different schools. My school requires us to take about 12 upper division Biology courses and a couple of math courses.

Pediatric, I agree - it was kind of strange.

Sounded really interesting, though.

I wish my school had a straight up genetics major. Major in whatever you want, it doesnt make a difference to med schools as long as you take premed courses, genetics is more than related to the field anyways.
