So I’m an incoming freshman out-of-state and originally planned on majoring in Biology or Molecular Bio. However, since I’m out of state, the tuition is a bit pricey (but still less than private schools). If I major in Genetics, though, I’ll qualify for in-state tuition (because of some New England state university alliance). Do you think it’s worth it to switch to genetics to save me $20k? How different are the majors? I’m doing premed, so is one or the other major better for that?
I’m guessing (though not sure without looking at the requirements) that the two majors overlap quite a bit, so if you choose to do Molecular Bio over Genetics, you could probably major in Genetics for the first two years and not have too much trouble switching to Molecular Bio afterwards. After you switch, it will be OOS tuition, but at least you’ll have saved at the start.
I’m also going to guess that both majors overlap significantly with the premed track, so either way doing the major requirements will probably fulfill many of your premed requirements.
