does anyone know how strong these programs are? I know RPI is reputable for its engineering majors, how well do its geology and cognitive majors compare?
Don’t know, but you can check out their webpages and reach out to the professors:

Just off-hand, I have heard of their cognitive science program, but have not heard of their geology program. The majors are different enough that you might want to think more about which you will pick. Certainly cognitive science should have more of a math bent and be a “better fit” with what most at RPI are doing (engineering or science).
Also there are notes about opportunities for undergraduate research in their cognitive science program.
