For undergraduate studies of International Relations, should I go to Georgetown (Walsh School), American (SIS), or George Washington (Elliot School)?

I'm trying to find the best program that allows a lot of independence, as well as a good environment. I hear Washington DC colleges usually are filled with rich pretentious kids (Sorry if I'm stereotyping. I didn't say this, I was told this), so I want to avoid that is possible. Also, I guess Georgetown would have the best program, but I also want to factor in my chances of getting in. Please tell me what you recommend and why. Thanks

My stats are:

30 ACT
1980 SAT
750 US SAT
710 World SAT
650 English SAT
3.9 GPA
ranked 70/450

Georgetown doesn’t count the writing SAT, so a score out of 1600 will give you a better idea.

I don’t really assess chances, but if you like all three programs and schools, apply to all three. If you don’t know, look into it. If each seems worth the application, go for it.

If most of your other colleges are NOT reach colleges, then apply to Georgetown. It certainly will give you the most prestige and open the most doors.

All three are great colleges for international relations. American has more of a traditional campus in a semi-suburban area, while GWU is in the middle of a very urban part of DC. American just finished a new building for international relations.

P.S. - American is a very easy college for an application. They don’t have a supplement and they don’t require any extra essays. GWU has lots of extra essays, so there is much more work in putting together their application.

Georgetown will be the most difficult admit, American probably the easiest. GW admissions results can be unpredictable. They want to be shown lots of love. If you can’t come up with a compelling case (in essay form ) for why you want to go there, you will be rolling the dice.

You don’t mention if you are looking for need-based or merit money. American and GW offer merit aid, not sure about Georgetown. You’ll need to look at the stats for each school to see how likely your chances are for receiving aid.

GW is an urban school, integrated into the city. American and Georgetown are distinctive campuses. Many people strongly prefer one type of environment over another; it’s almost a CC cliche that students visiting American and GW will hate one and fall in love with the other. :)

I do love that the American students are allowed to go trick-or-treating along Embassy Row.
