I applied to Georgetown in late January/ early February and thought I had pretty good essays. After having my interview and visiting campus this weekend though, I went back and re-read my essays and realized they don't really convey the real reason I want to transfer...they focus more on academics, while now I realize that the reason I most want to transfer is the sense of community at Gtown compared to my current school.

I know it's too late to fix, but how much of an impact do you think a cliche, though well-written, essay will have on my application? I heard they want people who are passionate about the school, and my essay definitely doesn't convey passion, just well-articulated facts. My college GPA is a 4.0 and my HS stats are pretty strong, but if my essay is lacking something, will they take that as a big factor?

My understanding is that the essays play a huge role once you meet the base criteria.

The top schools get thousands of applicants with near perfect GPA’s and good EC’s, so you need to be able to distinguish yourself amongst the pack.

The essays are the way to do that. You can show more who you are and why you’d thrive at X school, what you hope to accomplish and how the specific school will be able to provide you with something you can’t get wherever you’re coming from through the essays than you can with just your grades.

For my Georgetown Essay, I wrote about my interest in political science (government) and their strong program, desire to continue my volunteer/internship work for SAVE the Children (non-profit in DC) as well as explore other internships relating to political consulting and to compete for a walk on spot for the baseball team.

I believe that the admissions officers want to get an idea of your interests and how they relate to studying at Gtown.

Which college are you applying to transfer from? Sophomore or Junior?

Last question, did the admissions officer say anything about a deadline for submitting an interview report? My interview is scheduled for April 7th, but somebody said they had to be submitted by April 1st

i’m applying for my sophomore year to the college. the essay isn’t badly written or grossly inaccurate, it just talks way more about my academic aspirations than my social goals in college, which are way more georgetown-specific. (i’m already at an awesome school, so i don’t want them to think i want to transfer only because gtown is a ‘better’ school…it’s the whole community i want).

about the interview, my interviewer said there is a deadline, but that he talked to them and it’s ok to get it in late, they’re more lax about transfers since they know its often logiscially more difficult to organize. i wouldn’t worry about it, i think it’s way more of the interviewer’s responsibility.

I have been corresponding with my interviewer and she has never mentioned anything about a deadline, so I would assume that even if there is a ‘deadline’ that it is ok to turn in a week later.

Where are you at school right now?

I am at a Top 30 LAC, but am not satisfied with the remote location

I know a few kids who go to CMU and definitely wouldn’t characterize them as ‘normal’.

I had a decent HS GPA 3.2 UW, average SATs (CR: 670 M: 570 (awful) W: 600) SAT 2 Math 1C: 630 US History: 610 AP Gov: 4 AP Psych: 5 APUSH: 3 APEuro: 3 and an ok college GPA of 3.4 first semester, but sent a 3.75 to Gtown for mid semester. Hopefully decent recommendations and a little support from the baseball coach will help me. Average EC with student government, president of community-service oriented club, editor of newspaper, tri-varsity athlete, tour guide (boarding school student) College: Tutor and Baseball (d3)
