Georgetown or NYU?

So I've submitted my enrollment deposit to NYU, but got waitlisted at Georgetown. I'm posting this now because I can't seem to make up my mind—what would I do if I had to ultimately decide between the two?

I absolutely love both NYC and DC...they're both my two favorite cities in the world. However, I see a bit more opportunities for internships and real-world experience in NYC than DC. Correct me if I'm wrong!

At NYU, I plan on double-majoring in Politics and Journalism; at Georgetown, I would major in Government and take their brand-new Journalism minor. I've heard that NYU has better programs in both fields—but isn't it freaking GEORGETOWN?

Feeling very conflicted. Any feedback at all would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

I would say you shouldn’t worry about it now! Both are great schools, but chances are you are not going to get off of the wait list for Georgetown since the wait list acceptance rate is near (if not) 0%. I would worry about it if the situation arises, but definitely do not bank on it.

Also, Georgetown definitely has better programs in both fields…it is arguably the best political science program in the country. NYU is good, but it is no Georgetown. Either way you will be happy and successful so don’t fret!

I think I am uniquely qualified (AS A PARENT) to reply since I’ve had kids at both these schools – and my daughter was accepted to GTown off the waitlist (really!)

NYU is a really big, really impersonal school. I know it has the location location location but keep in mind that you are going to school in one of the most expensive cities in the world. There’s no real campus to speak of altho, yes, there are buildings concentrated in the Washington Square area. And, yep, you’ll live in a fabulous dorm your freshman year but after that – my DD was in a dorm south of Canal St. in a room that had exactly one window which was covered by a balcony so no natural light. After that year it was off into the wild wonderful world of renting an apt in NYC. Also, we had one or two occassions to (try) and get in touch in w/faculty and/or administration regarding certain issues – really unresponsive - the the point of being almost rude. BTW DD liked it there but says if she had to do it over again she’d go to somewhere else.

Georgetown has the advantage of - while it is in a big city - it has a very defined campus and a real college feel. Some students do move off campus but most seem to live on – or just off if you are lucky enough to get one of the historic Gtown townhouses right outside the main gate. As parents we’ve found the school – while large-- to be really responsive. Without going into too much detail DD had a situation one semester and to say that administration / faculty was understanding and available would be an understatement. This was a personal situation so they were under no obligation to us but phone calls were returned promptly, emails sent, communication kept open. We were, frankly, astonished and so perhaps my feelings toward the school are a bit biased. But I don’t think this was an isolated incident and don’t think we were givien any special treatment (not like we’re big donors she is on almost full final aid!)

Those are just my impressions – aagain from a PARENT’s perspective – both are fine schools and sure you’ll have a good experience wherever you end up.

Thanks for sharing your story. From one parent to another, I’m glad to hear that Georgetown was responsive to your daughter’s needs. I would expect they would be given the welcome we received from Dean Gillis, Father Obrien and other professionals at both the GAAP weekend and convocation. Glad to hear the school came through went it mattered for you.

I always seem to be the only person saying, “Financial aid differences?”

On the subject of financial aid, all my friends who were accepted to NYU got little to nothing (some of which were in the income bracket where they received full aid from other schools). Its notoriously stingy apparently. I, myself, have been accepted to Georgetown and my finaid award takes care of all but 2k.
