I am a senior from North Carolina debating whether or not to take the Morehead Cain to the University of North Carolina (Full ride, four extremely valuable and fully funded summer trips, $8,000 stipend, and one of the world’s tightest-knit alumni networks that provides some very impressive networking opportunities) or Georgetown (Specifically McDonough)…
Georgetown has always been my dream, but the Morehead Cain just seems too impressive to pass up. I’ve just never imagined myself attending a large state university. I love the idea of getting to live and study in the nation’s capital city with all it has to offer but just love the Morehead in general. I want my life to be an adventure, which the Morehead seems to offer.
A key thing to note is that money is not necessarily an issue in this decision.
Another thing to note is that I’m planning on studying something related to International Business and Finance (Things McDonough is highly regarded for). However, UNC’s business school, while less internationally-focused, is climbing the ranks and becoming one of the best undergrad business schools in the country.
I would love some advice for helping me to get through this tough choice.
Congrats! Cohort scholarship programs like Morehead Cain are amazing and provide an incredible undergrad experience. I would not hesitate to accept it. My D is graduating this year from another cohort program and it has been an amazing experience. The students in the cohort are as impressive as students at any top 10 school. She is graduating with 3 degrees, an elite job, has traveled all over the world, made wonderful friends, and really enjoyed undergrad. On top of that, the experiences she had allowed her to win a prestigious fellowship so she’ll be getting another fully funded cohort experience.
Congratulations on achieving admission both to your dream school and to one of the most prestigious packages in the country.
Morehead Cain seems like the easy choice to me. With the money you’ve saved, you can plan on living and studying in the nation’s capitol while you get your MBA at Georgetown McDonough after graduation from UNC.
The Morehead-Cain scholarship at UNC is the wiser choice, in my opinion.
FWIW You can attend Georgetown for grad school. Georgetown McDonough just announce a one year Masters in Management (MIM) program for recent grads, for example.
Although this does not match your interests exactly, this type of 10 month masters degree programs for recent grads are increasingly rapidly.
For a 10 month program in international business consider the masters program at the University of South Carolina.
If truly interested in international business, consider earning foreign language proficiency during your undergraduate years.
Silly question and money is always a factor because if you chose to spend $75K (assuming you have no aid from Gtown) a year over $0 - even if it was a free ride to Western Carolina - you’d be foolish.
You may not know this at 18 but when you’re 28 and 38, you’ll look back and realize what a ridiculous question that you asked.
Well, to be fair, the OP’s family could be loaded (8 figures or more in net worth). In that circumstance, money may indeed not matter that much. But I would still choose the Morehead-Cain. Better experience. K-F has the GLOBE program (look in to it) as well as other study-abroad opportunities. Honors Carolina has a DC program as well as other programs all around the world.
Honestly, if they have 8 figures, it’s still a silly question.
Warren Buffet lives in an ok house and drives a Cadillac.
If my kid had a Morehouse-Cain level scholarship to Alaska Anchorage, she’d be on the first plane out.
I’m not getting on the OP - it’s a high schooler. Just pointing out that when they are older - they will see (at least in my opinion) there’s no debate on this one.
My preference is not to work til i’m 90 But yes, personal preference. Plenty of people spend $300K on education. But if you spent $300K when you didn’t need to, you might not have $10 mil +. But i get it - it’s a fun thought.
What a phenomenal choice to have to make. You make a lot of great points about GU–living in DC, McDonough and access to International Biz is huge. But I’m sure you’ll be able to do a DC internship and the kind of personalized opportunities UNC is offering you is beyond what almost any other school (not just GU) will be able to offer you. You’ll always be able to live in DC–I think you’re giving up more in this instance if you pass on UNC. Good luck and congratulations.
Where do you live in NC? Near Chapel Hill? I can see wanting to get away, but unless you live in town then I think go with UNC. You can go to grad school or get internships in DC.
How is this even a question? Morehead Cain isn’t just about money – that program has incredible connections with fellow students and alumni, many of whom got into HPYSM but chose the MC. MC 1000%
