Georgetown pre-med vs SLU Med Scholars

Georgetown neurobiology (child is pre-med track) vs SLU Medical scholars. We are from DC metro. Can we get pros and cons please.

Full pay at Georgetown vs VP scholarship at SLU. Keeping fees out of picture, can you share your thoughts? Thank you.

Thanks so much in advance!

Several people already have posts with SLU Med Scholars vs XYZ. I would follow those.

SLU scholars doesn’t seem that beneficial and about half have to drop it due to the semester gpa requirement so, in the event she can’t continue in med scholars or would not go to med school (which most premeds don’t) what would be best for her?

If money is not involved (but it should be), Gtown will trump SLU in every thing in every way.

Gtown will provide a much broader range of options if she opts out of medicine/health care which many, many kids do.

Which school does your child like better? Will you take on debt for Georgetown? Med school is very expensive.

SLU Med Scholars has its place. If your child is very sure about becoming an MD then it’s not a bad option. Has your child been exposed to medical professions? Have they interned or shadowed any doctors? If your child isn’t sure about med school then maybe not the best option. Is there a “door number three?”

Thank you. Yes child has done shadowing and clinical volunteering and is 120% committed to becoming an MD( her words). She wants to go to SLU. And she is from a high rigor and T5 high. Cho do she is sure of working hard and maintaining the GPA. This is also the reason she wants to go to SLU so she can be a big fish there.

We A’s parents want to fund and think GTown would be a better option just in case she changes her mind.

Thank you again for the suggestions

Thank you. That’s what we(parents) are suggesting.

Yes money is still involved but we plan to fund most of it and she has 529 as well. Getting all the thoughts keeping money aside becos she also got into uva

Thank you so much for your views

So UVA is door number three? Is it considered in-state for you? If so, that’s a pretty nice option.

Being a big fish in a small pond isn’t a bad thing for med school. It sounds like she understands that where you go to undergrad isn’t that important, it’s GPA and MCAT scores. It also sounds like she understands that costs matter and that it’s a marathon not a sprint.

I don’t know if SLU is a good program but it sounds like half make it through the program. Half drop but it could be many reasons besides GPA…transfer, miss home, party too much, change their mind about being an MD, etc. But, for the ones that make it through it’s almost a guarantee they go to med school somewhere.
