[
] Summer Activities: Engineering research for 3 years, traveled abroad
[] Essays: I think they were good for the most part, no lower than 7’s, doubt they were 10’s though
[
] Teacher Recommendation: History teacher and calculus teacher, both coaches for my debate and speech teams, 8/10 for both
[] Counselor Rec: Probably good, always pestered her about taking extra classes but somehow she took a liking to me 8/10
[
] Additional Rec: don’t think there is one for Gtown
[li] Interview: Finance professor at local state university, he was pretty cool, asked me about my career interests, was a little surprised that I said my ultimate goal is something like Chairman of the Fed (although I did clarify that I’m aware that wouldn’t be easy at all), but admired the fact that I knew a lot about business and investment banking and was knowledgeable about some of the material. I kind of over-dressed for the interview too, wearing a suit, but we met in his office and I probably should’ve just worn a nice sweater and slacks. Overall, interview went well. [/li][/ul]

[
] Weaknesses: SAT II’s, no business related EC’s
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: Pretty well rounded, not many weaknesses[/li][/ul]

General Comments: Not going to lie, I was freaking out a couple days ago because I had just been handed three rejections (a waitlist is pretty much a rejection) in a row, so I was pretty stressed. Initially, I had been thinking that Georgetown would be my safety of the remaining schools, but I’m beginning to take a liking to it and have learned recently that its a lot better than I thought at first. Not sure if I’ll make it into the Ivies or NYU, so for now, Hoya Saxa!

Accepted - Virginia Tech, Purdue, UVA, Carnegie Mellon; Deferred - Harvard; Rejected - Duke and Stanford; Waitlisted - UChicago; Still waiting on decisions from - NYU, UofM, Yale, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Princeton, UPenn

[
] Job/Work Experience: Nothing huge, but some tutoring and some laboring-ish jobs
[] Volunteer/Community service: 200 hours or so
[
] Summer Activities: Same as other ECs… I don’t do any amazing summer trips, can’t afford it.
[] Essays: Apparently a lot worse than I originally thought, so I don’t really know
[
] Teacher Recommendation: Teachers were both impressed by me, but I never saw the RECs, so I can’t comment
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t really know her, get the vibe it wasn’t great
[
] Additional Rec: None
[li] Interview: He really liked me, actually! It seemed to me that he’d send the best recommendation he could–seems it wasn’t enough.[/li][/ul]

Other

[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes!
[
] Intended Major: Government
[] State (if domestic applicant): Northeast
[
] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Private
[
] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[
] Income Bracket: ~60k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First-gen![/li][/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT I, ECs, Interview, intended for my essays to be strengths…
[
] Weaknesses: SAT IIs, Course Selection/Rank
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: I think my biggest flaw was SAT IIs; behind that, it was course selection but much of that wasn’t my own doing, so I hope SAT IIs contributed more to my downfall than that… Pretty junk junior year, downward trend… in short, I think I had too many reasons to reject me and my reasons to accept me just couldn’t outweigh it.[/li][/ul]

General Comments: Rejected from Northwestern, Notre Dame, UVA, and Georgetown now. Accepted at USC and University of Michigan. Honestly, I’m somewhat surprised and humbled with all the rejections… maybe I’m not the PERFECT candidate, but I thought I’d be at least likable enough to get into Georgetown or UVA. Still four decisions remaining in Emory, UPenn, Cornell, and UNC, but barring something crazy, it seems incredibly likely I end up at Michigan.

Michigan is great, but wow, feels odd to feel so little love in this process. Really looked forward to weighing decisions towards end of April, but it seems my decisions are making themselves so to speak. But I guess the saying goes–it’s not about the ones who don’t want you, it’s about the ones who do!

General Comments: There’s no cut-and-dry rule for writing the SFS essay, but I worried about how I should structure it when I was writing it. The way I did it (for future applicants’ reference) was to introduce it kind of like a personal statement, with a sort of more-formal anecdote (I talked about the Humans of New York special series on refugees) and transition into a more structured, analytical essay. I don’t know if that’s exactly what they’re looking for, but it worked for me I guess.
Other than that, congratulations to everyone who was accepted! And to those who were waitlisted or rejected, I know you’re disappointed and probably don’t want to hear it but you’ll be happy no matter where you end up as long as you keep your eyes ahead rather than staying stuck on what could have been.
