Georgetown SFS Essay - Topics

Hi!

At this point, I want to focus on a global issue in my area of expertise (Brazil). I am NOT sure though if this is a proper approach–whether or not I should instead approach the issue from a global standpoint, proposing a very general solution, or whether I can showcase my passion in offering a solution tailored to, in this case, Brazil.

Any input is appreciated, especially those of you who have been accepted (or even not, for examples of what to avoid)!

Thanks!

I think it’s fine to focus on Brazil as long as you have maybe a paragraph explaining (or at least mentioning) how the issue presents itself elsewhere. You should try to be focused and passionate without turning the essay into a research paper. It’s still a college essay that should be written well and possess a strong voice. Tbh, there really isn’t one type of essay they’re looking for. Some successful essays are serious and full of facts while others are lighthearted and fun- all are well written. Maybe try having someone read your essay once it’s done and see if he/she thinks it sounds like you.

Current SFS student here. I’ve talked to a lot of people about their essays and I know some who wrote about more regional things like drug smuggling or specific free trade agreements. Nevertheless, you really should make certain that you take it from a global angle. Maybe talk about Brazil’s rising influence over Soya markets or in international negotiations, or explain how Brazil could use soft power to achieve certain desired outcomes in Venezuela or Cuba. Globalizing your expertise is what the SFS is all about so pick a global problem and then explain how Brazil might be a key model or actor in solving it.

I am applying to Georgetown University too! I haven’t yet started the process, however I am curious. What is the essay prompt this year?

SFS class of 2019 here. When I applied last year I focused on a specific area (Uganda) and I don’t think it’s completely necessary to discuss the issue elsewhere, but you do need to look at it globally in that the issue I discussed (lgbt right) had traces to the US and I discussed intervention from foreign powers too. I really think depth is more important than breadth for this essay. Just my two cents

@Cosmopolitian13 I think so. I’m pretty sure it’s the same every year

Okay, thanks
