Georgetown Summer Law Institute

I’m thinking of applying to this program, its one week long. From the schedule and looks of it, it seems to offer some pretty cool experiences (http://scs.georgetown.edu/courses/1281/law-institute)

As of now I want to pursue law (I’m a high school freshman) and was wondering if anyone has heard anything or has any experience with this program? I’m not expecting this summer program will help me get into Georgetown, just trying to see if it will be worth the fee and the long plane ride.

I’m not sure what the Law Institute is exactly like since I attended the International Law Summer Institute this past summer (summer of 2015), but it was fantastic. It was about 9 days long and I flew in from the New England area. The dorms are not spectacular – but who really cares, you’re there to learn and have a great experience at a college right? They give you a tour of the college and then you’re put into groups and each day there are lectures and small field trips in the DC area and lectures from visiting professors/barristers/judges/authors and each day you have discussion sessions with the group of around 8-10 people that you get to know really well overseen by an undergrad, and so you get to know the people really well.

One thing I would suggest is, if you are flying in all the way from Dubai, then stay for a slightly longer course. I feel as though 9 days will be tough on you since you may be jetlagged and not able to focus in lectures as much. Having said that, in my International Law group of around 120 students, there were kids from Italy, England, Monaco, Puerto Rico and even Hong Kong! (some of them were snoozing during lectures though!)

There are courses that are 2, 3, 4 weeks – even the whole summer long, instead. Perhaps try one of those, if you can afford it? Then you could actually get college credit for the course you take, and that looks good on college apps! If you just come for the institute, they are non-credit, so they cost a lot of money but you don’t have a really college grade to show at the end of it.

It’s a beautiful campus with loads to do, really friendly undergrads and fantastic professors. Even though the International Law institute I was in was brand new and had never been run before, it was still run very smoothly.

Hope that helped!

That was so helpful, thank you! My parents told me the longest duration I can be at camp is two weeks, and the longer courses do not offer the subjects I would like to take (Law and International Relations) :frowning:

Do you think it would be a waste of money/time if I took the 1 week Law institute and the 1 week International Relations course back to back?

I am also considering going to a two week program at Emory University, but I really want to to go to Georgetown, it’s really my first choice.
