Has anybody taken a course (the summer program for high school students)??? I want to take the law/politics course (since i want to double major in poli sci & pychology) and I'm wondering if it's worth $1800 !

if you have : How did you like it ?

and do you think it would help if i have the summer program on my app. ?

I don't know exactly what program you are reffering to, but I will tell you what my experience was last summer.

Last year I participated in the "American Politics and Public Affiars" summer program. It wasn't exactly a class (no credit) but it was a week long seminar program and it was run by Georgetown University.

Basically there were like 3 lectures a day or so, as well as time alloted for our political simulation (which was really fun). Sometimes we had 3 hours between lectures, and other times 20 minutes (keep in mind some people didn't go to all the lectures, I think they only took roll call like twice.)

I really enjoyed the entire experience because it gave me a taste of what college life at Georgetown would be like. We were really allowed to do whatever we wanted as long as we checked in at 10:45 on monday through thursday, and 12:45 on friday and saturday.

One day some friends and I went into DC, other times we just walked into GTown...It was really relaxed and chill.

I would highly reccomend it.

In terms of helping get into the college, I don't know yet cause I haven't heard back, but to be honest I don't think it does much besides solidify your interest in the school.

You should do it. Gies you a taste of college life and Gtown!

As far as application goes, it does not help you get into Gtown per se, but it will look good in terms that you did something with yourself one summer and enrolled yourself in a rigorious course rather than bummed around on the beach (which is fun!, but doesn't look good on the resume)... if you can afford it, I think you should definitely do it both for the experience and the application when time comes...

I'm also not sure what specific program you're asking about, but I did go to a Junior Statesmen session this summer at Georgetown where I stayed for three weeks on campus and took a class on U.S. foreign policy. It truly was an amazing experience and showed me a lot about what the Georgetown campus is like. I learned more in that class than I ever have in all my years of schooling regarding world affairs and it was really cool to be taught by an actual college professor (he was from Howard University though, since this wasn't the actual Georgetown University-run program). The Junior Statesmen program was a bit different because it was a class for high school credit (they offered other classes, too, like AP US Government), so we were in class for six hours a day except for the days we went into DC to visit the Pentagon, Capitol Hill, the CIA, etc. In that regard it was not so much of an actual college experience since there was not as much leisure time, but I still found every minute of it to be absolutely enjoyable. I think the coolest thing was being able to daydream while staring at the Washington monument out of the classroom window. It was pretty surreal :)

If you have the opportunity and the cost is not too much of a burden, I would DEFINITELY recommend taking a summer program, especially since you are interested in majoring in the subject. I assume it will look good on an application since you are doing something highly productive with your summer, but my guess is it will not be a determining factor in your acceptance. Really, though, a summer program is a way for you to experience new places and things that you might never otherwise get to see. You learn a lot by living on your own, and chances are you'll meet a bunch of cool people just like you from all over the country. It's a really cool thing. That's why I recommend you go for it, even if you have to work hard to scrounge up the money. I promise it'll be worth it in the end.

I would definitely do the program. Like MichiganWarrior, I did American Politics and Public Affairs this past summer. However, it was not a "for-credit" program; the one that you mentioned might be- I don't know. Anyway, it was a great week, and I would be happy to answer any other questions that you might have.

I don't know if it will help you get in, but having experience at Georgetown will give you lots of material for your interview. Because my interviewer and I could discuss the school in a much more detailed fashion, my interview went very, very well. I really think that you should go for it!
