Georgetown Transfer to UVA :D

Hey all, I really appreciate your doing this. Any advice or commentary would be welcome :D
I desperately want to go to UVA

So I go to Georgetown University, but I’m a physics-math double major. I was accepted to UVA as a freshman, but (because I’m stupid) decided not to go there. Georgetown physics is bad, especially for what I want to do (grad school).

SAT
760 M
740 CR
710 W

HIGH SCHOOL

4.4 GPA (Effectively all A’s with a few B’s thrown in)
Fresh, Junior: 5 Academic classes + Orchestra.
Soph, Senior: 6 Academic classes

14 AP Classes (Ones listed on Common app):
-Scores of 4: AP Lit, AP Spanish Lang
-Scores of 5: AP Physics C-Mech, AP Calculus BC, AP Macro, AP Micro, AP Gov, AP Comp Gov, AP US History

Community Service (volunteering at hospital 2 years)
Volunteer for 2 statewide political campaigns
Student Campaign adviser to School Board Candidate
3 years of orchestra

Admittedly, high school EC’s aren’t that good. I doubt they’ll kill me though.

GEORGETOWN

3.54 GPA :/ (No excuses, but I had a few ridiculous classes and a few setbacks during the semester)
PHYS-151 Mechanics (4) A-
MATH-140 Intro to Mathematical Stats (3) A-
ENGL-042 Gateway Modernist English (3) A-
THEO-001 Problem of God (3) B+
HIST-180 US History until 1865 (3) B+

College EC’s are better…

Spring: A full editor at one of the two on-campus newspapers (overseeing two pages every week)
Fall: Copy editor, News writer, & Opinion contributor

Math & Science tutoring 2 days a week, every other week
Volunteer with homeless food initiative thing

Professor Recs: one will be great, the other will be pretty good
(Great: History & Pretty good: Physics)

OTHER INFORMATION

White male from South
Mother is UVA alumna
Essays will be good

Thank you all very much! :D

Also, I forgot.

Next semester classes:

Electromagnetic Phenomena (4)
Multivariable Calculus (4)
Computer Science I (3)
Theology class about the Quran (3)
100-level English Class (3)

You’ll get in. Cornell is also good in those areas.

Thanks, Rain202! I’m just a little anxious about it.

I’m also applying to Cornell, Columbia, UChicago, & UNC. But, if I get into UVA… I’ll probably go there.

Anxiety is normal, and don’t sweat it if you wind up staying at GU. Do they have an exchange program that would let you take any relevant courses at schools in the area that are better-known in physics?
I agree I think you have a good shot. If you are in-state, I doubt there is sufficient academic difference between UVA and your other targets to justify the difference in tuition, especially since you plan on graduate school.

Thanks, herewego. I think so too, UVA is a great school. UChicago & Cornell are somewhat better, but they’re all on the same tier. Besides, I think UVA is a better fit, socially, for me.

On the point of having to stay at Georgetown, I respectfully disagree. I don’t want anything on the Internet trashing Georgetown, but Georgetown’s physics, in my mind, is only acceptable if you want to do something else with it (business, law, teaching). I seem to be the only one wanting to enter a field relating to science.

There is a DC University consortium, but the only better physics school would be UMD- College Park. 1) It’s very far away, and 2) I think you can only take advantage of it for classes not offered at Georgetown, which is feasible, but that would leave the vast majority of my physics classed taught in Reiss 502 by Georgetown faculty.

Georgetown physics has one floor. UVA has an entire building. I can’t tell you how excited I am for that.

If I have to stay at Georgetown, I’ll have to change my major (to economics of some sort).

try carniege mellon or uiuc or g or v tech they also have a very strong physics department. i agree with herewego because UVA and Gtowns physics departments are quite similar how would you honestly know that they don’t have a strong department when you have only been there for one semester and tank 1 physics class? my advise talk to your proffs and take some more physics classes.
