Georgetown vs. Johns Hopkins vs. UChicago

i love everything about gtown and pretty much have assumed i'd go there since i got in EA, but before i decide, i wanna have all the bases covered. i am interested mainly in math (general, applied, statistics, whatever... we'll see) and possibly chemistry. i know that's not stereotypical of gtown, but the math department is heavily growing, they just moved into newer classes, they have a 5 year applied math program i may be interested, they have fewer math majors than the other schools so i would be one in a few vs one in a few hundred, and with chemistry, they just updated all the labs and are currently building a new science building opening in 2012... i met some professors and i love the liberal arts idea of the school, the city, and the fact it is easy to double major esp. with math...

my main thing against jhopkins is baltimore: the surrounding area was not what i could call home, and i don't want to always be stuck on campus... plus, i never got that "feeling" with it... basically, it's not gtown, its not dc.

i loved uchicago's campus, but i'd have to fly there and back--i wouldn't have to for the others... i also felt it was a tad too intense for me, very graduate vs undergrad focused compared to gtown, and again, i never got that "feeling"--i pretty much ruled it out that i wouldn't belong there.

do reputations really matter that much if i am in love with georgetown? however, i know i'd be happy there, and to be honest, i wanna decide asap and just send it my deposit... what do you think?

oh, and pretend price doesn’t matter.

Georgetown has an excellent rep.

If you “know” you’re going to be happy at Georgetown, then what’s there to deliberate? It’s not as if you’re settling.

haha, thanks. i just wanna make sure i’m not skipping over anything and not making a hasty decision.

I suggest a last minute visit to Hopkins and GTown just to confirm your feelings. I think the area around Hopkins is nice and Baltimore definitely has some great haunts (Fed Hill, Canton, Fells Point and Mount Vernon).

I think the Math department at Hopkins is very well-regarded and definitely has some superstars teaching there. You’ll definitely be with some other amazing mathematicians at Hopkins which would make for a pretty cool learning environment.

For math, science and engineering, go with either Hopkins or Chicago. If possible, visit both campus before deciding.

my feelings are definitely solid… i’ve been to gtown within the last week and have gotten that feeling every single time i’ve been there (~4 times)… i know that hopkins has a very well-regarded math department, but if i’m not in love with the school, is that a reason to turn down georgetown?

Son’s GF is a math major at Georgetown. Math department may be small, but its faculty is top notch…lots of personal attention. GF will enter the 5th year program in the fall. Job prospects seem decent after that. Its good to see you feel the love for Georgetown. Its a great place in many, many ways.
