I plan to major in Bio-Chem. & minor business, may be pre-med, not sure yet. I am awaiting IVY results but have got offer from Georgetown & University of Rochester. I will definitely go to IVY if I get in but if not which is the better of the two. Any advise ?

Georgetown! Rochester is only good for like computer science and engineering, not that great for business. If you’re into computer science/engineering, Rochester will be better for you than Georgetown. Otherwise, it’s Georgetown hands down.

Which college in Georgetown were you admitted to?

Georgetown will help you in premed, as it as its own university hospital, and its McDonough School is incredibly strong if you’re interested in investment banking and/or consulting. DC is a hotspot for ibanking recruiters, while no such companies venture to Rochester to recruit.

Definitely go with Georgetown, it’s much more prestigious than Rochester as well!

Not true. Rochester has the Simon School of Business, at which undergraduates can take courses. While it has no specific “business” major or minor, it does have a management certification.

Humanities and social sciences are also very strong at Rochester.

So does Rochester, right across the street from the undergraduate campus. It’s called Strong Memorial Hospital; it’s also where the med school is. Rochester also has more opportunities for undergraduate research than it has undergraduates. And it has exceptionally strong science programs.

Not true. Maybe not as many as in DC, but most large ibanking firms recruit at Rochester (to the extent now that they recruit at all!).

All that being said, you need to get a feel for each school and its location. You can get a great education at either. Do you want to be in Washington? Do the upstate NY winters scare you? Do you hate hot, muggy and a lot of insects? Do you want to be involuntarily immersed in politics, the stuff that makes Washington run? Is transportation an issue?

These are all questions that no one can answer for you. Where do you want to live for 4 years?

Fiske’s Guide makes no mention of Rochester’s Simon School of Business. Interestingly, you bringing that up makes me think of Northwestern and their recent introduction of a certificate program in affiliation with its Kellogg School, as there is no business minor or major at Northwestern, either.

That being said, you don’t go to Rochester for business, that’s just pretty obvious and common sense. Frankly, a Georgetown McDonough junior told me the business school isn’t that great except in ibanking and consulting, as Georgetown’s prestige and name are what essentially draws top recruiters.

Ask anyone, too, if you say “University of Rochester” – no one is going to think of business. McDonough on the other hand, is very well known.

For premed, you won’t go wrong with either university. Premed is actually one of Rochester’s strengths, and they have this Rochester Early Medical Scholars program that offers highly qualified first-year students guaranteed admission to med school after 4 years. Georgetown is pretty strong in their premed program as well.

So basically, if you want to do business go to Georgetown, but if you’re more into premed you can do either university, but like Chedva said, make sure you actually like the environment of the college you choose.

Personally speaking, DC is so much more appealing than upstate New York. Granted, it’s a political hotbed (well, DUH, the Capitol and White House are in town! as well as many senators, congressmen, politicians, etc) but DC the city itself has great features of its own, with museums, clubs, etc. that aren’t available in Rochester, NY.

I consider Rochester to be the stronger of the two in sciences, probably by a lot; for business, probably a toss up. Georgetown has greater name recognition and is probably, over all, more prestigious for whatever that is worth. In the sciences, however, it largely rides on its reputation. It is way down on the list of funded scientific research–its medical school notwithstanding. The best programs at Georgetown are the Walsh SFS and the Law School.

In terms of location, there is no comparison. Rochester is a great school, but its biggest problem is that it is in Rochester. DC is a much more interesting city, with much better weather. And Georgetown is one of its better neighborhoods.

I think the choice turns on what is most important to you (and, as always, financial considerations if there is a difference).

Rochester is very strong in economics and has a very mathematical/theory twist on it…I haven’t heard the same for the more practical/applied/business economics.

I got BC accepted to BC this evening. My first interst is Bio-chem. All I need is some business knowledge to manage my money later. I am waiting for my merit aid from UR. GT & BC do not have any merit aid. Hopefully I get into one of the IVY
