Here is an email I recently received from GTech,

"During the admission process, the Committee of
Undergraduate Admission reviewed over 17,600 applications, and all of these students are
competing to become a member of a freshman class of 2700."

That's about a 15% acceptance rate!! How? Last year's acceptance rate was 50%. What happened?!!

Or Wait, Am I missing something?

They offered admission to about 40% this year. They only really expect 15% or 2700 to accept.

garg, 2700 is the number of freshmen that actually matriculate at Tech, not the number of admits. I believe last year Tech admitted between 8000-8100 students to get a freshman class that size. This year is the first year that Tech’s admission rate dropped below 50%. My guess is it’s around 45-47%.

Tech’s admit rate was about 39% this year.

Just so you know:

2013 Admitted Freshman Profile
Applicants: 17,611
Acceptance rate: 39%
Average GPA: 4.0
Averaged Number of Weighed Courses: 8.6
Average SAT: 2150 (713 Verbal / 744 Math / 694 Writing)
Average ACT: 30

2700 is the number of students they expect to fill the class out of those who were offered admission. Of course, since GTech switched to the Common App a few months back, their acceptance rate will likely drop to the low 30’s at least for next year.

LOL!!, that clears things up. Thanks a lot. I almost got a heart attack! 15% is lower than Berkeley!!

Historically, the admit rate has been around 50 ish %. The decline last year was (as was presented during Preview GT Day) due to a significant increase in applications. i.e. the school’s growing popularity is making it tougher to get into.
