Georgia Tech applicants, ask me anything

Hi. I’ve applied for Georgia Tech this year as an international student.

Can you tell me what Greek life is like? Would joining a fraternity be a good way of getting myself “out there”?

Thank you for your help! I’ve been stressing out about my decision recently. Do you remember if people in your graduating class who had numbers near mine were admitted?

@manimal first of all, great name. Secondly, my roommate is actually in a frat and he loves it and I mean there are parties within frats a lot, but that is not what it is all about, A frat is like a network and I have had some friends that have graduated that got a job just by simply knowing somebody that knows somebody, if that makes sense. Also, if you need any advice on classes and such, you have experienced people that can help. So I would say if you are in to a fraternity lifestyle, do it, if not, there are many other things to get involved in to get yourself out there.

@Mary1234 Yes and no, I have had 2 friends with stats very similar to yours and one of them got in, the other did not, granted he did not have many extracurricular activities. Honestly, I think you will be fine and you will get into a great school. I had a 4.2 and 1880 SAT, got into Tech, Dartmouth, Miami, and Georgia and waitlisted at Virginia Tech. (idk?) Admissions will always be a mystery to me.

Ive heard that the average Sat for this years class is going to go up to the high 2100’s since tech switched to the common app. What chance do you think i have being an international student with a 2170 and above average ec’s(lots of sports) and top 5% of my class??
also how are the internship opportunities at tech?? do people intern at google or the sorts(cs or compE majors)??
also how does tech’s reputation compare to berkeley, michigan and those kind of schools(not the stanfords and MIT’s) in engineering?

As Georgia Tech students, we don’t really “know” your chance of getting in. If you want to know everyones opinions, start a chance thread.

There are lots of internship opportunities at Tech. I have had many CS friends intern at Google, Facebook, Palantir, Apple, Amazon,Qualcomm and Microsoft and I have interned at one of these companies as well. Im starting to think that Microsoft has permanently booked a room at GT since they are recruiting so much.

Our tech reputation is awesome and we regularly have all these companies in our building trying to recruit students by giving away free pizza and other stuff.

Hi Motheshow and cool1234,

Thanks for offering this. I’m about to apply to transfer to Georgia Tech for the Fall 2014 and hopefully everything will goes well.

1) “There are lots of internship opportunities at Tech,” you said. But are those opportunities easy to get? I mean, do employers expect us to have a lot of skills related to the field? If not, what kind of things do they expect us to know at least before applying? (I’m an EE major)

2) Do you think 40,000 in student loan seems scary for a typical Georgia Tech graduate? In other words, is 40k in student loan too much?

3) Are there many safe cheap apartments near off the campus?

Thanks

How is the Aerospace Engineering program? Is there a lot of opportunities for internships?

@Motheshow: Hey! First of all, thanks for all the info on Tech. I do have some questions for you. I see in your previous post that says you got accepted with a 1820 SAT. That was when you applied last year right? I just wanted to know bc I applied with a 1940 and am really nervous after seeing alot of people on here have really high scores in the 2100-2200s or more. I’m and instate student in the IB Diploma program at my high school with a 4.0 GPA on my transcript and alot of rigorous classes/volunteer hours/extracurriculars/leadership roles. So I’m guessing it is possible to get accepted with a score a bit below the mid 50%?

 1. I have heard coming from tech as long as your gpa remains in good standing (3.0) it is actually easy to get an internship. I myself have not had one, due to me only being at tech for a semester, but I do have an interview for a position doing biotechnology next month.
 2. 40,000 is a lot of money, however there are those that are 6 figures in the hole. Are you out of state, and if so you should invest time trying to find and apply for scholarships.
 3. Apartments, I am actually looking for one myself. It will be cheaper if you find a roommate and get like a 2 bedroom than getting a single bedroom, but there are some affordable ones.

@timfredo Gatech’s aerospace engineering program is ranked number 2 in the nation… speaks for itself. I am sure there are plenty of opportunities to intern in it. Tech has a lot of conferences where you can meet employers looking for interns.

@norcrosshigh It is definitely possible, think about it, some people have to be lower than the 50% mark for there to even be a 50% mark. Do not use college confidential as a comparative, because the people who take their time to do this usually are the more serious upper percentile applicants. There is no way comparatively to those on college confidential that i could have possibly gotten in to tech and Dartmouth. Good luck on admissions and you will be fine, do not be nervous because that wont help anything, only stress you out :)

How do you convert ACT to SAT scores?

Hi, I am an international student who has applied to GT(Mech Engg). Could u please explain what is Greek life and what is a frat. Also, I have talked to a lot of people and everyone is saying I don’t have a chance at GT with my sat(1940: 620 CR+700 M+620 W). My GPA is 10/10 in ninth and tenth and 93.2% in 11th( I don’t know how to convert to US system ,probably 3.8/4). I have decent EC’s especially in Science and Social Science Exhibitions.
SAT II: Math 2:800 Chem: 740 Phy 710. Also my brother studies at GT(Mech Engg). I don’t know if this helps but I mentioned it on common app. So, do u think I have a shot

@rocky789 honestly i don’t know how, I would just go online for sat act conversion chart

Haha thanks Motheshow!
