***Georgia Tech Class of 2020 EA Applicant Thread***

I know MIT values students who show interest in things outside of STEM; is Tech the same?
I talked a lot about music in my CommonApp. Not sure if that’ll hurt me.

@glasshours , not at all! Tech values outside of engineering activities. In fact, they are very big on community service (thats also their motto). Thats one thing that they made clear at the presentation. That they love people who are passionate about different things. Its all about diversity for them (and good scores and all that). Thats honestly the only thing that I have, I dont got those tests scores or that high gpa

I think you’re all awesome, my son included! :slight_smile:

@Fireball99 Your GPA is wonderful considering your course rigor. The admission officers will interpret your GPA as if you went to a difficult but very quality school in light of your scores. You’ll get in unless you have no ECs whatsoever, you’re one of the best applicants on here!

And send me those essays, I’ve had probably 10 people on CC send me essays for me to grade.

@Xboxgamergirl Did you apply to MIT?

I got an e-mail from their football team today. Even if I get in, I doubt I’ll be able to afford it…

@Hermit9 , yeah! I got an offer to swim with them with a 1\4 scholarship. But first I have to be accepted. And same, I honestly wanna stay close to home, so I dont think I would attend…it also is expensive. I rather do my grad (mba) from there.

Congrats! I didn’t realize D3 offers athletic money.

And same! I’m thinking about going somewhere free for undergrad so that I can get a doctorate with plenty of money still available. I don’t want to be that guy who postpones postgraduate education until his mid-life crisis sets in, lol. :smiley:

^^ haha, exactly! Thank you! And congrats to you too!

If I get into tech, its basically free with Zell miller so that’s a opportunity I wouldn’t wanna miss out on.

And like you said, when I go to grad I wanna make sure that I have money to safely land on and not be in debt or anything like that!

What major are you looking into?

@Xboxgamergirl Yeah, I see myself doing undergrad at Tech. With Zell, it’s the same cost as the school I attend now, lol. Hopefully I’ll be able to get more in scholarship money, too. I was offered a 4 year full ride at UAH, too, so I’m considering it for undergrad to save my parents $$$ for later postgraduate studies.

If I attend Tech, I’ll probably do a double major in applied and discrete math. What about you?

@Hermit9 CONGRATS!! I think I’m gonna either double major in statistics and computer science or statistics and applied math.

@Xboxgamergirl Do math! Actually, the discrete math major is primarily combinatorial and deals with branches of math also used in comp science. Just a suggestion, but look it up and see if you’d prefer that to applied. Between both math majors, there are only about 130 undergrads doing math at the Sciences College. How cool would it be if we got to do studies together?*

And thanks!

*Me trying not to sound creepy

@Hermit9 k sent you the essays… Thx!

@Hermit9 , haha-thats not creepy, thats actually cool! I would love to work on case studies with you**. So apparently there is no statistic major or minor. So now I have to decide which math-discrete or applied. I tried reading the online description but it didn’t really make sense. Do u mind explaining the difference between the two majors?

**me trying not to sound creepy :slight_smile:

@Xboxgamergirl Haha, sure thing. Applied math deals with topics relevant to those aspiring to work for insurance companies, as risk analysts, and things like that. Computer Science is a mathematical approach to many of the topics used in computer science.

The best way for you to see which you’d prefer is to look at the core math/science and also the 4th year electives.

Hey guys, can someone give me a good idea of if I have a chance or not based on just my objective stats? I’m OOS.

SAT: 2250 (770 W, 740 M, 740 CR)
SAT IIs: 800 M, 780 Chem
GPA: 4.0/all As
I’ll have 13 APs total when I graduate, including all the science and math APs except the physics Cs and calc AB.

@sunsh0wers

Unless your EC’s are kicking puppies or cannibalism I would say you’re in.

@sunsh0wers Looks good, what are APs and ECs?

@PButter sorry to get back to you 2 days later. No, not on Buzzport, but on mydecision.gatech.edu

Thanks everyone! I was mainly worried because I read somewhere that the average SAT I math score was a 750, and I got a 740.

@Hermit9 - All the history and English APs, most of the science and math APs, and French. Also did a research project outside of school and won some awards for art; pretty typical in-school ECs with a few leadership positions.

^^^ Sounds good, if most of your scores were 5s and 4s, then I’d say you’ll probably get in.
