Decisions are out!
IM IN!!!
accepted!!
Congrats guys.
deferred in January, accepted today!!
How do you know what major/college they accepted you for? They didn’t specify in my letter.
do we receive welcome packages?
Yeah they came in the mail about a week later for EA @yeah123yeah
thanks!
Someone told me they got into georgia tech without applying. Is that even possible? I worked really hard and was regected so im pretty ticked of. I was just wondering if georgia tech accepts people who didnt even apply.
As far as I know, the only people that get in without applying are the football or basketball players who are actively recruited. And they only have to have a 2.5 GPA to meet NCAA standards. Last year their average SAT score was between 1000 and 1100 for math & reading combined which was the HIGHEST across the top schools. This year the acceptance rate is 25%, down from 44% two years ago when my son applied. Sorry you did not get accepted but there are plenty of other good schools you might get into. They accept a higher rate of 35% of those from Georgia since they are a public school. My son got rejected from UNC Chapel Hill even though he had reference letters from a high up official and solid GPA and SAT scores. But was told if he did not have a 4.0 as an out of stater, he had little change of getting in. The in staters are not held to that higher GPA standard.
Even athletes have to fill out an application. For GT, everyone accepted has to fill out an application and apply. Some athletes might get a “likely letter” from admission before they have filled out an actual application. A likely letter is a pre-read by the admissions office of a recruit’s file to give the recruit and coach some kind of indicator as to whether a college will accept the recruit. However for a likely letter, the coach and athlete have to provide the admissions office with basically everything needed for an application (which for my students has meant essays too). If they receive the likely letter then the athletes still have to submit the actual application. Since the NCAA has “signing days” before admission decisions are out, this is a tool that is used for athlete recruits.
I am sorry you were not accepted to GT, but your efforts on your application were not a waste. GT has become very popular with applicants and with the rise of submitted applications, it is getting harder to get accepted. Good luck at the college you will attend this fall. I am sure you will have some very good choices.
Okay so I applied early decision, got deferred, and then ACCEPTED during RD. However, I didn’t fill out the 3 scholarship apps by Feb 15 since I had read I automatically qualify if I apply before the EA deadline. I did complete them the other day, and emailed my GT counselor but no reply. On their website, it said the final deadline to apply for fall aid is July 31… Is this right? Why is it so late? What do I do?
That date is the final deadline for state and federal aid so that whatever aid would be in place by the time tuition is due. Most students do it way before then.
Hey so I’m OOS and was accepted EA. I just got an e-mail telling me to login to my account to see my scholarship awards. I was awarded $500 from a regional GT club and $500 from GT scholarship alumni network. I have not been awarded any other scholarships/aid. Although I am very grateful for the scholarships, I am just curious if these clubs/networks give out at least $500 to everyone OOS or what the minimum amount that they’ll give out is.
@ohio101 The amount you received is what they give out and not every OOS gets one. My DD received $1200 her year (total but divided the same) and she was the only entering freshman in our region to receive that merit money. Each regional alumni club raises that money on their own so some clubs have more to give and others have less.
I hope I answered your question. The scholarships listed on your account are the ones you will be receiving. In the very rare exception a scholarship may be added later, but I have only heard of that happening for one student.
@itsv thank you! Do you mind telling me what her stats are?
@ohio101 I am sorry but I really guard my children’s privacy when it comes to their exact stats. I will say that my DD was not a valedictorian and her SAT was not over 2000. She had great EC’s and some were very unique-plus she is a very good writer so early on (at the end of her sophomore year) she expressed her love for GT. I’ve gotten to know GT’s admission staff and they do value much more than gpas and test scores. We have also gotten to know our regional GT alumni club really well. Last year the local alumni club told me “she was an easy choice for our alumni scholarship because she was phenomenal and far above anyone else from our area.” (their words, not mine).
GT is not very generous with merit for OOS and especially with financial aid for OOS (OOS students usually get just very large loan packages). The GT Women in Engineering Program awards additional merit scholarship in March of each year for that school year. You need to have a 3.0 GT gpa to be eligible to apply as well as an engineering major. Last year 1800 students were eligible, I don’t know how many students applied and 122 scholarships were awarded. My DD received one last year and just found out she got one this year- $1K for each year. Students apply in February and you must show involvement in women outreach etc. Here is the link: http://wie.gatech.edu/current-students/banquet/scholarships-awards
My DD’s major is very good at publicizing information about scholarships in their weekly newsletter. There are additional merit awards administered from GT that students can receive once they are enrolled. ASME gives the ME Department $$ which they award over the summer. Some clubs like SWE and SHPE give out scholarships to their members. There are other department scholarships that students can receive as they become upperclassmen.
My DD applies every year to a lot of private scholarships (focusing a lot on engineering ones) and she gets between $14-$10K with the scholarships ranging from $500 to $5K each. On top of that she did study abroad which only charges in-state and then she has two internships lined up for the summer and fall and should make enough to pay a big chunk of her tuition. It is very much a patchwork kind of solution, but it works for our family and makes GT affordable for us. My DD is fortunate that she hasn’t had to take out any loans.
Hope that information helps. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
@ohio101 I saw in your posts that you also are considering Ohio State. My DS graduated from there in 2014 and loved it. My DD loves Georgia Tech and has had an incredible experience there so please feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions about either school. I am very lucky, my children have had great educations and got merit money to do it. Good luck in making your decision.
@itsv thank you for all of the information!
