General Comments:

Any stats on deferred applicants? Are deferrals essentially rejections? Trying to learn.

Son deferred. OOS. 34 ACT, 2310 SAT, 3.95 UW GPA, 11 APs, ECs, leadership positions, hospital volunteer. We did not visit GT and wonder if that made a difference.

@WineDrinker My son has almost the same stats as yours except we’re in state. We did visit the school and he was deferred also. He contacted his admissions counselor by email at first, and ended up talking to her on the phone. He asked what the weaknesses were in his application, and she told him it was his GPA of 3.97 UW (at the time). He’s applying for Aerospace Engineering, by the way. I have to say that I’m skeptical on the reason given, but that’s exactly what she told him. His GPA came up a little bit with his fall grades of all A’s, but who knows what will happen.

@WineDrinker , @bahiablue , that is just incredible that they would defer such strong candidates. Could it be that the admissions office was just overwhelmed with applications? My son was admitted OOS with 3.97UW , 36 ACT but for Chem E, virtually identical stats. We visited (once) . How could a 3.95-3.97 GPA be a problem? That’s one B+ and all A’s in 3.5 years of school. I am perplexed. I’m sure you will hear good news in the near future.

Thanks @TooOld4School. After reading some of the stats that other kids posted in the other longer decision thread and in this thread, I’m just glad he was deferred and not outright rejected. It’s just gotten so competitive. I will say, it was quite interesting to hear who the kids were at his school that did get in. There were some boys at my son’s school with better stats than he had that were deferred also. There were some other students with lower stats that were accepted. I guess that shows it is a holistic review. Still though, at least it wasn’t a rejection and we’ll see what happens. I just wish we could hurry up and find out. Thanks again and congratulations to your son! Tech is a great school!

Bubbleberry, I am sorry that you are rejected. Did you ask why GT rejected you? Your profile looks very competitive to me.

Bubbleberry, your SAT seems to be 2250 instead of 2290. Did you make a mistake when entering the break down?

nhsrikanth, your son’s SAT is 2330, unless you made a mistake in the break down. However, I think your son’s profile is very competitive. I do notice that you son is Indian Asian. I wondering if this has anything to with the defer status. I noticed that another competitive Asian was rejected (Bubbleberry).

No RD thread so I’ll post result here:

Reflection

Strengths: Good scores, involvement of ECs, CA Essay

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Good scores and no glaring weaknesses
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: UIUC CS, UMich, Case Western (Accepted) UChicago (Deferred) Waiting on Columbia and Cornell

General Comments: Yay… but it’s expensive and I think UIUC CS has a comparable program for much cheaper… Still, nice to have options open.

Decision: Accepted- Scheller

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2310 ( CR 740, M 770, W 800 )
ACT (breakdown): didn’t take
SAT II: Math 2 800, Physics 800
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.991
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 10% (school doesn’t rank though so GT wouldn’t have seen my rank)

IB (place score in parenthesis):

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Indian Dance, Vocals, and Violin; Classical Violin, Freshman Mentoring, Freshman Tutoring Club (founder), Robotics, National Honors Society (founder of tutoring department), Beta Club (founder of tutoring department), Relay for Life, Math Team, Debate Team

Web Design Internship with the local middle school

Volunteer/Community service: tutoring, tutoring, tutoring; volunteered for my school’s AP Bio and Orchestra departments

Summer Activities: the research internship, traveling, and more volunteering for local non-profits

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App- (7/10 or 8/10) talked about how I founded the school’s major tutoring clubs and how I tutored two math teachers in calculus (I thought this would attract their attention, not everyone can say they tutored math teachers in math) it really gave an insight into the type of person I am and a lifelong experience and commitment to teaching, but I guess it wasn’t the type of hook they were looking for

Why Tech- (8/10) talked about how I want to join the dance team and how i loved the experience of taking gt’s distance calculus

Unbound Future- (9/10) how tech’s diversity will expose me to new cultures and provide me an avenue to an unbound future of international interaction

Motto- (10/10) don’t let anything block you from pursuing your goals (but worded differently)

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: (10/10) APUSH teacher- I’m his favorite student and he knows me really well. I sit in his class every day during my free period and we just talk and he told me he wrote a very personal rec

Teacher Rec #2: (9/10) AP Physics teacher- I used to go into class every day in the morning and talk with him and he likes me, I don’t know how this recommendation would be like but everyone says he writes great recs

Counselor Rec: (6/10) she barely knows me and she made us all submit biographies and resumes for her to write them so I doubt it was good at all

Intended Major: Finance
State (if domestic applicant): Georgia
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public charter school
Ethnicity: South Asian

Reflection

Strengths: everything in objective, I know my scores and my grades and my course rigor was amazing. Recs were great too and I had two internships

Weaknesses: not enough leadership. I never ran for any school office, I preferred to lead in the background (like with founding the tutoring club and being in charge of backstage at concerts), essays were probably not as creative as others’

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Female business student and ONLY business applicant from my school, which accepts around 60 engineering/computing kids every year. I might even be the first business student accepted from my school. who knows?

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to University of Georgia (safety), rejected UPenn

Bump, is georgia tech single choice early action? I want to apply there early but not if I can’t apply anywhere else. Thanks in advance!
