I have recently been admitted to Georgia tech Lorraine (GTL) at the department of ECE to pursue my PhD. I am from an Asian country and trying to get into a United States University, however ended up with Georgia Tech Lorraine. I understand from the information in their website, it is an extended campus of the renowned Georgia Institute of technology. Nonetheless, I am confused if my degree at GTL will be considered equivalent to Georgia Tech Atlanta or not. Another question, if I want to move to US after completion of PhD, would my chances of finding a profession as teacher/researcher be diminished? Comparing University of Toledo at US and GTL which should I choose?
Seeking suggestion from appropriate individuals.
Thanks.
It doesn’t appear to be possible to be admitted only to Georgia Tech Lorraine - for either an MS or a PhD. From GT’s website:
So you have to apply to Georgia Tech’s main campus in order to be admitted for study, and then you can choose whether or not you want to go to Lorraine to study. Double check with the university! It’s also unclear to me whether or not you can do a full PhD at GTL - some pages say you can, and some pages don’t mention the PhD program at Lorraine at all.
My offer of admission is from Georgia institute of technology, the main campus in atlanta. But they decided my campus to be Georgia tech lorraine which as it says in their website a satellite campus of GTA. I’m really allured by the reputation of Georgia tech at the same time little worried as to what extent Georgia tech lorraine degree would equivalent to Georgia tech atlanta.
Call the ECE department, or email them, and ask them if you HAVE to complete your PhD at the Lorraine campus, or whether you have the option to pursue your PhD at the main campus in Atlanta. If they say yes, then you can ask what the profile of PhD students who attended in Lorraine is compared to students at the main Atlanta campus, and what kind of job placement those students get after graduation.
It’s hard to tell in this case. Usually, branch campuses are not viewed exactly the same as the main campus, including the overseas arms, but exactly how well it compares - and how well it compares to other lower-ranked U.S. schools - is kind of hard to tell in general, but especially outside of the field. My guess would be that the Lorraine campus is not viewed the same as the main campus - different professors, different research, so different kind of program - but will probably be more highly regarded than the University of Toledo.
