georgia tech presidential scholars

so, me and 2 of my friends did not make it to Semifinalist status. I am really surprised. I know they are looking for high scorers from out of state, but all three of my friends are extremely smart and have good ecs. I posted my stats here somewhere, but one of my friends is a varsity football starting linebacker who's ranked 9/450, taking multivariable calculus AT georgia tech, will finish with 10 AP classes, 1380 on SAT. My other friend will end up with 9 AP classes, also taking the GT math class, 1500 SAT, but ranked like 80/450. You would have thought that one of us three would have gotten in... If anyone here gets in, please post your stats/ecs/scores/etc. Thanks a lot and good luck if you haven't gotten word!

I went to the UGA/GT football game this year...biggest bunch of nerds I've ever seen.

How do you find out if you're a semifinalist? I was accepted to GT yesterday, but the packet did not mention Pres. Sch. All my other friends who were admitted are confused too.

I got my acceptance letter this afternoon, and then about an hour ago someone called to tell me I so PS semifinalist, so I'm really happy right now!!

some stats:
out of state (NY)
SAT: 2230 (750V/760M/720W)
GPA: 4.0 on their scale
school doesnt rank
APs: 4 last year, 6 this year (they dont see scores so no point in posting)
ECs: 2 sport varsity athlete (captain), speech and debate (captain), science olympiad, latin club (vp), volunteer lax coach, 3 years reaseach w/ awards

enysome1344, is there a formula posted somewhere to use to get the GPA for GaTech? Do they count +'s & -'s?

for GPA, I dont think they count + and -, just A=4, B=3, etc and then they weight honors and AP by .5 but you cant get any higher than 4.0. I'm not exactly sure and cant find a link right now, but thats what I remember.

I think it's really difficult to get that award. An adcom told me they only award about 10 to students from GA.

According to them, out of approx 4600 that applied, the top 10% were selected as semifinalists (~460). From that, they narrow it down to about 100 finalists who get money.

I'm fairly sure about that number (the guy repeated it a lot). The out of state students (30-50%, can't find info on this) are generally much stronger academically than GA students, and GT gives a great majority of the awards to them to entice them.

Well, I think the OP is wayyy underestimating this scholarship. Last year, there were about ten people from my school who had much better stats- mid-1500's old SAT, more than 12 AP classes, national math/science competitions, and almost perfect GPAs- and nobody got the scholarship.

I was notified as a semifinalist yesterday night. Two other people from my school made it as well. I'm in-state btw.
The way I see it, GT has to pick high caliber ppl who they believe will actually go to GT. Many of those cream of the crop ppl are more likely to go to another more prestigous school without that much scholarship. And yea, I think out of state people value GT a lot more than I do, haha.

"The President's Scholarship is Georgia Tech's premier merit-based award. It is offered to approximately 110 outstanding entering freshmen who have demonstrated superb leadership skills, are among the top few in their class in academic performance, and show promise of continuing such performance in college and beyond.

The amount of the scholarship depends on a student's final ranking in the competition. The top five Georgia residents and the top five non-Georgia residents will be awarded full rides. The remaining awards will be split among the other three levels."
