Georgia Tech Pros and Cons

vblick on another post suggested I raise my questions in this thread too.

Son is considering attending Georgia Tech. Please share your positive and negative experiences.

He has been accepted to the Computational Media program but is also interested in exploring other fields such as Chemistry, Computer Engineering, and Cyber Warfare.

Any info on average financial aid packages - merit based aid would also be valuable info.

I'm happy to be a student at Georgia Tech. I'm a business major, so our professors aren't required to continuously make grant requests. Consequently, I've found my professors to be very approachable.

My only complaints are non-academic.

First, I've found that a lot of the employees at the university gym are Nazis. (I admit bias here: "a lot" could just mean one or two.) For example, an employee once gave me a hard time because I lower the bar quickly when I deadlift. He claimed that I was "dropping" the bar even though the bar never left my hands. I followed his directions for my next set but on the last rep, I accidentally lowered it faster than the others. He came to me and threatened to kick me out. After I finished, I went to him and asked him if he could be more forgiving when people were trying to listen to him. He gave me crap about how you can't tell if a guy is trying to listen to you or not. When I realized that he was full of himself, I gave him the stinkeye. I went back to my normal way of deadlifting, and he hasn't approached me since.

Second, the good tennis courts are managed terribly. The recreation center (ie. the gym) is supposed to open the courts in the afternoon on the weekends. If it gets "cold," their employees won't show up. If you want to play on the good courts, you have to be a member of the Tennis Club. I oppose that on principle. I pay athletic fees, but to actually use a court I am properly entitled to use, I have to pay extra? That's extortion.

I applied to Washington & Lee, UGA, and UNC-CH. (I'm a Georgia resident.) W&L offered me a full tuition merit scholarship; UGA offered me a $3,000 scholarship in addition to HOPE; and UNC-CH didn't offer anything.

GT offered me a National Merit scholarship if I chose them as my institution. The amount varies from $1,000 to $2,000 and ironically is determined by need.

I applied for both the Honors Program and the President's Scholarship, but they rejected me for both.
