has anyone actually been to ga tech?

I haven't but I heard its really ugly and the dorms are like prisons. Is it that bad?

#15 Campus Is Tiny, Unsightly, Or Both Quality of Life
#17 Dorms Like Dungeons Quality of Life
#17 Least Happy Students Quality of Life

from Princeton Review.

I do not go to Tech (HS senior), but I live about 5 minutes away.

First of all, the area that Tech is in is REALLy cool. It's in/extremely close to the heart of the city, yet it has a campus. As far as the campus, parts of it are very nice, but like you suspected, there are also parts that are very unsightly. It's bound to be a bit unaesthetically pleasing when it is set in an urban location. So yes, there are more than a few parts of Tech that are ugly, but there are also a few parts that are nice. My mom thinks that it is absolutely hideous, but then again she went to a New England college with tons of green...as far as the dorms, I couldn't say.

It is an urban campus....and the school is old so they have some old facilities. That said they got a large influx of $ with the 96 Olympics, the gym and swimming area are world class and they got I think one new dorm. Since them the GA economy had been moving along well so the school has gotten additional $. I saw construction when I was there.

The dorms I visited were older and on par with dorms I've seen at most of my visits to other schools.....two beds two desks off of a long hallway. My sister had a similar room at Clemson 4 years ago. Not a palace but not a jail either.

There are supposed to be better but these, the ones i saw, appear typical of most large public U's IMO.

Things are looking up in the tech part of town. The new aquarium is near by and lots of new housing at Atlantic station which is also nearby. With gas prices up, the intown area is getting a lot of move backs as parents see their kids off to college. Happened with a lot of my sister's friends parents.

So I think the area around tech is decent and improving. dorms typical or average. ..GATech has message boards on their site. There is an ask a student section. Try there for opinions.

Me, I'm going to tech average dorms and all. Its a difficult school. Teachers do lots of research so teaching is a lower priority however students seem to form their own learning groups. If you are very solitary you may have difficulty. There are research ops and the coop program is first rate. Thats one reason grad rates are low after 4 years but rise at 5 and 6. Tech is all tech all the tim even the englich class material is technical. They are beefing up the libberal arts program but this is a tech school.

Lastly M/F ratio is 80/20 which defintely colors the campus culture. Good luck on your decision.

Yeh, Tech has been in the top 5 for "Most Unhappy Students" on the Princeton review a couple of times--and the teachers really blow. They rank this year in the following categories: "Class Discussions Rare"; "Professors Get Low Marks"; "Professors Make Themselves Scarce." The campus isn't horrible, but it isn't Athens either. Go to Tech if you want a great engineering education--not if you want the full-blown college experience.

I've been @ tech for four years and am heading in to my last semester:

15 Campus Is Tiny, Unsightly, Or Both Quality of Life

The campus is not tiny, so they must be refering to unsightly. I wouldn't say its ugly, but its not Cambridge. There are some old buildings that have nice asthetics but also some 50's buildings which are hideous (Van Leer, Skiles, to name a few). There is plenty of green space and they are making improvements every day. BTW: MIT is also quite ugly, although again it has some nice areas.

17 Dorms Like Dungeons Quality of Life

Dorms are standard issue. I don't know where this notion comes from that they are horrible. There is nothing great about them, but that goes with most college dorms. Visit and ask to see a room, they'll show you one. There are older dorms which are kept up somewhat well and also some very new and nice (but expensive) places as well.

17 Least Happy Students Quality of Life

Maybe true. People here do complain a lot. It drives me nuts. I'm happy, I have happy friends too. You keep busy here, not a lot of drunken parties or panty raids. There is a good social vibe however because most (not all) are quite down to earth and quite smart. You'll be much more mature than most of your other friends at the end of 4-5 years. You just won't be able to spell.

I'd say those ratings are rather skewed and based on stereotypes.

One visit would probably answer your top two questions.

I visited Georgia Tech last June and it is actually one of the few campuses I liked throughout the whole process. So far I've visited 7 campuses and disliked/hated 5 of them (GT and Yale are the only ones I liked).

Campus beauty is not high on my list of criteria when choosing a school, (and frankly I'm turned off by schools to boast about their beauty) but nothing on the GT campus stood out as being exceeding ugly. I like that it is in the middle of a city, but still has a campus with grass, fields, etc.

I also visited, and after hearing everybody say how unsightly the campus is I was surprised. They have lots of attractive modern buildings and some older ones with character. There were only a handful that I thought were truly ugly (including some of the greek-life buildings). I'm more excited than ever about going to Georgia Tech.

I live in the Atlanta area and have a ton of friends at Georgia Tech.

The freshman dorms are cramped. Expect raised beds, especially if you get a hall near I-85. Those dorms are pretty bad. The actual dorm itself is clean and presentable, but I remember communal baths which really turned me off. I live 40 minutes away, and given the state of those bathrooms, blech. If I decide to go there, I'll probably commute or work something out...

However, one of my junior friends lives in west campus (the side away from downtown/I-85) and she has an apartment-suite. Her room is bigger than most home bedrooms and she has a window in her room. The apartment has 1.5 baths, a foyer, dining area, a family room, and a pretty decent kitchen. She's not an honor student or anything-just a regular junior.

The campus is BIG, clean, and really nice. You'll probably need a car to get from one end to another because its pretty big. Consider investing in a moped..haha.

As for least happy students: I know people who love Tech and I know people who absolutely hate it. Many of the people I know who really love it are Econ majors, while many of those who wish they went somewhere else are in Engineering. However, a few years after they graduate, most Tech alums recommend the school to any high school senior. So you'll hate being there, but be thankful for it later.

Or so it seems.

I visited GT in June as well. I liked it personally, but it reminded me of where I have lived. I live in Houston (outskirts) and the weather was nice to me. Also, the lay out and general feel was reminescent of Tokyo (likved 3 years) so I felt at home. I also loved the ChemE labs and new Science buildings.

Yes, I can see that.

I was blown away by the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) - most impressive facility of its type I've seen on a college campus. The management building/bookstore is new, the conference center/hotel is new, the BioTech building is new, the new CS building looks immense... the student union was nice. The campus is not small. The West dorms are not very old and can't be that bad.

I'm having a hard time understanding the Princeton Review's comments.

The CRC looked like heaven to me...I personally liked the campus alot, of course I wasnt going in there with high expectations either. The west dorms looked really good, and freshman dorms are air conditioned :) something that a bunch of colleges up here dont have for freshman...which has to suck on those 100 degree days

I LOVED the campus. It is beautiful, green, and tree-lined. Yet, when you look up, you're surrounded by skyscrapers of Atlanta. There HAS to be some "unique" factor about that. IDK about y'all, but I thought that was cool.

CRC made my jaw drop, and I'm not exactly a "work-out buff", so you know that place was awesome.

Thank God I learned that before graduating HS, haha.

[/quote]

Yeah, we take our AC seriously down here. Especially with those urban-heat-island days... sheeeet.

I love how serene the campus is. I don't find it that unsightly, especially considering its in the middle of midtown. It's almost as if you're removed from the city when your on campus, yet you know the city's there. For example, when I was there for FASET, I stayed in Glenn, and before I went upstairs for the night, I stood out in the courtyard area and chatted with people for a couple of hours and it was so peaceful that you'd never connect yourself with an urban area. However, the next morning, as I was getting ready, I looked out my window and was overlooking rush hour on I-75/85. I wouldn't ever describe the campus as unsightly, maybe a bit quorky, but that merely makes it fun/ interesting.

So Glenn Hall would be one of the "old" east dorms, right? Was it run-down inside? dirty? unkept bathrooms, etc? Was it air conditioned?

Wow, I didn't know CC had these:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visits/georgia-institute-of-technology

All the dorms are air conditioned, even those on the east side. Haven't ever been in Glenn, so I can't comment on it specifically.

Glenn is the best frosh hall hands down.

We're the goatmen

I'm in folk and its just been renovated. Co-ed....yes both girls in this years' freshman class are on the second floor.

Rooms are clean with a nice common area inside the dorm and outside is a small patio area.

Its a lot of people who applied and got accepted early so pretty smart kids but all students at GATECH are but its easy to get homework and class help

No. 8 public university in the country
No. 4 graduate engineering college
No. 6 undergraduate engineering college
No. 1 industrial engineering program
9 undergraduate engineering programs ranked in the top 10
8 graduate engineering programs ranked in the top 10

I would hate living on West Campus though, even if they are renovated. So far away from alot of stuff, and everyone I've met so far that lives on West doesnt not particularly like it for that reason.
