how do you guys all get your ideas to flow out nicely on paper? i have all the stuff i need to write my essay in my head, it's just hard for me to write it into a paper. every sentence i write, i dislike, and the essay writing is starting to become a struggle (especially with the deadline for this essay comin up real soon). ideas please!

First, write uncritically.

Start anywhere in the essay, and just write without worrying about whether it is any good.

Put together a draft in this manner.

Then set it aside. Do something else quite different.

Come back to the draft essay later and only then begin to think what might be better said.

yeah, i've been trying to journal on the topic at hand, and it helps a lot. but that's the only "technique" i've really tried.

I agree with ADad! I actually suffer from the same problem you do: I always have these ideas formulating in my head, but I can never find the proper words to express those feelings. Everything just goes blank. So, if I can, I just write down whatever - really whatever comes to mind, even if it's just one sentence, a fragment or even a single adjective.

Go do something else for an hour or two and then come back to your notes. Based from that, you'll probably find something else to write. Or if that doesn't work, I just search for song lyrics or quotes or even a book to inspire me. Something to get your head thinking. Even if it's just eating.

There are even times where I'm just in the mood to write something; it's unexplainable. It's so Virginia Woolf, but I realized that I'm not always in the mood to write, and if time permits, I'll just let it go until the "moment" arrives. Usually that's a day or two before a deadline, because I always do my best under pressure. ;D

i'm exactly the same way! my best writing is when i'm in a time crunch.
but yeah, thanks for the advice.
