Getting a job after Swarthmore

I know it doesn't have a great alumni network or career services..

Academia, while admirable, is probably too idealistic, despite the number of PhDs SC produces.

There are an oversupply of lawyers so Law School isn't particularly an attractive option..

It has engineering, but I'm not much of a science guy.

So to any Swarthmore Alum, can you share your experiences on what you did after graduating or possible more lucrative majors (not including engineering) as back ups?

On another note, would a major in economics help in becoming an accountant?

I think Swarthmore has a pretty good alumni network for a school of its size. I was an economics major. As I recall there was one accounting course. I checked the course catalog and that is still the case. If you want to be an accountant, you should go to a university that offers an accounting major, and major in accounting.

I agree with dadx3: Swarthmore has a pretty good alumni network for a school of its size. And the Career Services office is good for a small school - they have a lot to offer and their staff and peer counselors are energetic and well informed.

I remember arranging a number of interviews in the field I was aiming for during my senior year, all of them through alumni contacts. One of them led directly to my first job.

D1 was hired for a terrific job in her field before she graduated last May. She found the job posting on a site she’d been directed to by the Career Services office.

career services is AWESOME. they have an event (recruiting, how-to, etc.) going on practically every day. lots of office hours. really open and friendly. when you go in for a mock interview they will tape the interview, go over what you did wrong, and give you the recording to go over. i don’t know what goes on at other schools’ career services but swat’s is more than happy to help.

I’m a consultant at McKinsey. None of the major consulting firms actively recruited at Swarthmore when I was there, and there isn’t a significant alumni network (as far as I know, I’m the only Swarthmore-alum member of the Firm in the US). That said, Career Services tries to be as supportive as possible, and I’ve heard from lots of folks since that they’ve upped their game in the field.
