Getting a job on campus, resume help!

I am apply as a Computer Lab monitor.

The problem is I don't live in that area, I live in the dorm. So when I put my address do I put my Dorm's or my real one? I am not an international student.

Also, when I receive my paycheck, is it in cash? Because if it is going to be sent to my home...then it is meaningless....

Also, are paychecks cheques? Do cheques expire if I don't exchange them??? What if I don't have a bank!?

Please help!

Also my resume sucks lol this is what I got
xxxx are real details

Also, I made my email with my name in it so it looks professional lol

Is it too short?

Put your dorm’s address, you will want checks to go to your mailbox at your dorm and not your home. Many schools do direct deposit, I have that and it’s very helpful. You really should get a bank account if you’re going to have a job, because your check will be in the form of a check and not cash. Often schools have a bank or credit union of their own, and there will definitely be banks near or on your campus.

Your resume isn’t horrible if they are seeking a freshman. They will most likely care less about how much experience you have (as long as you have some) and more about how qualified you are, your skills, personality, etc.

What is a direct deposit? I don’t have a bank account, I could make one.

Can they directly put it to my bank?

What happens if my dorm doesn’t have a mailbox?

Direct deposit is when they put money directly in your bank account so you have it right away. You do actually need a bank account if you have a job…were you just planning on carrying bunches of cash around? Lol

Your dorm will give you a mailbox, lol. How else would you get mail?

I don’t actually get mail so… lol

So I definitely will need a bank account to get a job? And yes I was thinking of carrying cash LOL

You posted: “Relevant Experiences: Library Monitor for two years. Familiar with how computer labs work.”

As an interviewer, I would like to see much more detail about how and what you did as a monitor at your computer lab.

You could just add on what you did as bullet points:
*Helped users get on/off system
*Received positive comments about my ability to work with ______ problems.
*100% on-time attendence record
*Never forgot to wear my Pocket Protector
*The tape on my glasses was always fresh and clean as a daisey.

** Just kidding about the last 2 points… but you get the idea, right?

And YES! YOU SHOULD INSIST ON PAYCHECK!!! DO DIRECT DEPOSIT IF POSSIBLE!!!
You (or your guardian) must report this income on tax forms, and a paper trail is VIP.

Good luck.

What does that mean…? I am so naive, once I get a paycheck, how do I deposit that into my bank?

You might not even have to worry about the mailbox thing.

I am sure every school’s employment stuff is different but there we only had three options to get our paychecks: direct deposit, pick it up at the university payroll office or pick it up at work. The work option is really the ‘mailing’ option and what the school does is mail the checks to the employer instead of everyone individually. I don’t know why that is, but I never had an option to get it mailed directly to me.

You can go on your school’s website and look under payroll services or maybe human resources to find all the info about how people get checks and stuff.

And having a bank account would make everything easier. There are ways to cash checks without a bank account but it’s probably best not to have a crap ton of cash lying around. When you get your check you have to go to the bank and say you want to deposit and then they’ll ask for ID and then put it into your account.

Idk, I might not know what I am talking about because I’m not a professional resume writer but as for your resume, you need to flesh it out. Are you really only skilled in Microsoft Word? What about Powerpoint, Excel, etc? Do you know what sort of computers will be there? Put something like “proficient in Macintosh and Windows operating systems”. Put your expected graduation year and your GPA, if it’s good. Explain in a few lines what you did as a library monitor and try connect it to stuff that has to do with what they want in a computer monitor. Def put the dates of when you were a lib monitor. Did you take any classes that are related to being a computer lab monitor? List those. Even highschool ones if you are a freshman.

And I’d write it like this:

Fluent in Mathematica (Wolframalpha)

Fluent in LaTeX

Competent in Maple 14

Advanced skills in MS Word

Not in one sentence with commas.

And also for your experience:

Library Monitor, YEAR - YEAR
Library Name, City, Country/State

 • Duty duty duty duty duty duty
 • Duty duty duty duty duty duty
 • Duty duty duty duty duty duty
 • Duty duty duty duty duty duty
 • Duty duty duty duty duty duty

And add to your objective why you want to be a comp monitor. Maybe something like you are interested in gaining a more human interaction approach to working with computers. Or something.

What about those ATM things? Can’t I cash it into there? I don’t know my way around here well…

You can deposit your check into an ATM if it is an ATM for your bank. (You can withdraw money from any ATM - with a fee - but only deposit in ATMs for your bank.) You will need a bank account to do this. And you can’t deposit it and take cash right back out - it has to clear first which will take a day or two. I would strongly advise getting direct deposit which is like automatically putting money in your account so that you don’t have to wait for it to clear.

I really think you should ask your parents or even go to a bank (one with a branch in your area) to help you with all this because you seem to not know a lot of things about banking and stuff, and it’s basically essential to know all that when you’re living on your own. You’re definitely going to need a bank account, you don’t want a bunch of cash all the time and it makes taxes a lot easier.

How do i even do direct deposits? Like will they ask for my bank account number?

I mean how do i select my own method of payment? Will it appear on the application?

They’ll give you some kind of form. And yes, you will need to give them your bank account number and probably a routing number which can be found on a check which you will get when you open a bank account.

Method of payment will not be on the application. They’ll tell you when you get the job.

I REALLY think you should ask someone to help you set all this up. It can be a little complicated and you really have to know what to do with money if you’re living on your own.

I am just gonna put it all in a bank…

Should I write “competent, but not fluent” for Maple?
