Getting a Research Position

When does the URAP application for Spring open? How else can we find a research position as an undergrad besides URAP? What other programs are there? I heard of people emailing professors and such but how do we find out what research professors are conducting and if they need help or not? What is a good website to find recently published papers on researches done by professors at Berkeley? Thanks!

Go to the department home page.

Look for a list of faculty, usually you can sort them by research interest.

Visit their research group website.

Read their publications. If the publications require a proxy (i.e. ACS), then you can use your CalID to login.

Make a list of professors whose research you find interesting.

Email them.

Yeah, and also with URAP, usually professors don’t want you contacting them, so they just may ignore your email/get annoyed if you email them about a position on URAP.

To land a good URAP position, keep your grades up and read up on some of the professor’s publications beforehand. Keep in mind that many of the “premed-y” positions are hard.

When does the URAP application become available for Spring?

January 11. It’s on the webpage.
