Getting a research position

I am interested in starting to do research in biological fields and eventually publishing my own project(s). From what I have read, it seems like I should email a bunch of professors and say that I am interested in working under them in their research lab. Do I just do this, get a job, and eventually ask to conduct a research project of my own?

Thanks for any advice!

I assume you’re a High School student.
What would “a bunch of professors” get out of this arrangement?

I would just ask them really really nicely if you could assist them in some way with their research without any pay.

Doesn’t hurt to ask. If you have any colleges near you, check the biology department pages. A few schools let high school students conduct research with certain professors during the summer. Research at a hospital is also a good idea. A few schools connected with medical schools/hospitals offer these opportunities to high school students. Act fast though, most of these positions most likely have been filled, are close to ending, or have ended.

If this doesn’t work, just conduct some research on your own. Some schools will allow you to send science supplements.

Ok, thank you. I live fairly close to UPenn and nearby hospitals. Also, my twin’s friend’s mom (very lucky) is a well known HIV researcher (On how it destroys CD4+ T cells), and I might ask her (I am very interested in immunology because I have recently been reading about it).
