I am thinking about hiring a tutor to help me with one of my Chemistry classes. Does anyone know what the price range per hour for an undergraduate student is? Also, Im not sure how to go about making the initial email contact. Is it appropriate to ask them to just tell me more about their services? Or should I ask them specific questions about their methods, time availability, and pricing? I guess Im just nervous about getting an answer on price and then having to back out because its not feasible for me. If someone could shed some light on this whole process, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi there. If you don’t mind me asking, which chemistry class are you taking/need help with? Although a tutor is an option you can pursue, I am not sure if it would be the best use of your time/money. If you are taking a large intro class/organic, the TAs are usually the ones grading everything and the ones most familiar with the material. Have you tried going to office hours or contacting one of them? Their help is free and they also probably would know the material/topics you should know for exams. Also, if you have friends taking the class, forming study groups is a GREAT way to learn the material. I know that really helped me get through my first two years in chemistry at UVA.

Although I think going to TA/professor office hours would be more useful, tutors are available. You could just talk to the chemistry secretary on the fourth floor (I’m pretty sure she has a list of names of people who would be willing to tutor). I’m not sure about pricing, but asking about methods/time availability would be appropriate things to ask. Don’t be shy about it or else you’re not going to get the proper help that you’re paying for.

Thanks so much for your response! Yes, it is for one of the big classes, Orgo. I hadn’t thought seriously about TA office hours, although I do attend the professor’s. That sheds some light on some of the stuff from class. To be honest I’m doing very well in the class as of the first exam so I don’t really know what I would even ask a tutor…but I figured it would be nice to have someone to ask all my “stupid” questions to.

I guess I’ll take some time to attend a TA’s office hours and evaluate whether a tutor is necessary. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, and thanks for your response!
